| Manny Machado on record pace for doubles |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (6/16/13) Orioles third baseman Manny Machado had another multiple-hit game Saturday night against Boston. It was his fourth straight multi-hit contest and it extended his current hitting streak to 13 games.
Machado has gone 18 for 57 (.316) over that stretch with six doubles, six RBI and seven runs scored. The doubles are what are setting Machado apart this season. Machado is leading the majors by a wide margin in doubles with 31.
His 30 doubles over his first 68 games played this season put him in some very rare company. Machado's 30 doubles over his first 68 games are the most by any player under the age of 22 since 1920. That tops Ted Williams' 25 in 1939 and Joe DiMaggio's 24 in 1936. Machado is currently on pace to shatter the major league record for doubles in a season.
Machado leads the major leagues in hits with 97 as Miguel Cabrera's 92 are second. He has 36 RBI and a .324 batting average to go with it.

| Manny Machado's hitting streak reaches 10 games |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (6/12/13) Orioles third baseman Manny Machado extended his hitting streak to 10 games Wednesday against the Angels, and he did so with his first multi-hit game of the streak.
Machado went 2 for 5 for his 25th multi-hit game of the season. He scored once and struck out once, while hitting his 28th double of the season.
Machado is hitting .317 on the season, but he has just a .244 average in June despite having at least one hit in all but the first game.

| Manny Machado making history as May ends |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (5/31/13) Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has been on a tear in the month of May, and it has reached historic levels on the final day of the month. According to the MLB Network, Machado's 44 hits in the month are the most for a player under the age of 21 since Mickey Mantle had 46 in July 1952.
Machado is also tied with Tigers' third baseman Miguel Cabrera for the major-league lead in hits with 79, while leading the majors with 25 doubles.

| The Orioles sure were anxious to get Manny Machado to the majors. The third overall pick in the 2010 draft had just turned 20 and was hitting only .266 with a .789 OPS at Double-A Bowie when he got the call in early August. And it wasn't just for a cup of coffee, but to be the everyday third baseman -- a position he had played only twice in the minors -- on a team in the thick of its first playoff push in 15 years. Yowzah. So naturally, he homered twice in his second day on the job and never looked back. Considering all that was thrown at him, Machado's performance over the final third of the season was admirable. He collected 18 extra-base hits, including seven homers, in only 191 at-bats, which gives you some idea what he has in store power-wise as he approaches his mid-20s. For the present, though, he has some shortcomings that might prevent him from making a significant Fantasy contribution. His lack of plate discipline -- he had a .294 on-base percentage despite a respectable .262 batting average -- leaves him open to exploitation and vulnerable to slumps, and he's no longer eligible at shortstop, at least while J.J. Hardy is standing. Given his upside, Machado is obviously a must-have in AL-only and long-term keeper leagues, but in seasonal mixed leagues, he's borderline. (Updated 12/4/12) |
