Villarreal has not allowed a run in his last seven innings of work. He's struck out 16, walked eight and has a 2.08 ERA through 13 innings of work in the minors.

| Tigers option Brayan Villarreal |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (4/24/13) The Tigers optioned reliever Brayan Villarreal to Triple-A Toledo Wednesday as they officially brought on board Jose Valverde, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Villarreal was given a laundry list of things to work on by manager Jim Leyland that would help him eventually return to the Tigers' bullpen.
"You got to command your fastball better and you have to get more consistency with your slider. That was a no-brainer," Leyland said. "That’s a big arm. I don’t want anybody to think that all of a sudden we’re off Villarreal. Villarreal was at times lights-out during spring training and at times lights-out last year."
Villarreal was 0-2 with a 20.77 ERA over 4 1/3 innings in seven games.

| Who is Brayan Villarreal? |
by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer (3/28/13) With Tigers reliever Bruce Rondon being demoted to Triple-A, the Tigers have a large void at closer. While there are four popular names bandied about to share saves -- Al Alburqurque, Joaquin Benoit, Phil Coke, and Octavio Dotel -- there is one hard-throwing member of the bullpen not being mentioned: Brayan Villarreal, who averaged 97.1 mph on his fastball in 2012, according to Fangraphs.
This spring, Villarreal has a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP, with 14 strikeouts in 12 innings. The converted starter was shut down this winter when he encountered some elbow soreness, but he looks as good as any other reliever this spring. My personal stance is avoid all these relievers and go look elsewhere, but if they're all being gobbled up in your AL-only league -- and you really want a Detroit reliever to call your own -- Villarreal has just as much skill as the others in the mix.

| The Tigers are loaded with candidates to pitch the eighth and ninth innings, so in all likelihood Brayan Villarreal will be used in a middle relief role this season. On another team, Villarreal might have a chance to close, as his upper-90s fastball gets a high rate of swings and misses. Owners looking to draft Villarreal will just have to be content with getting more than a strikeout per inning and a handful of holds. It's also worth noting that the Tigers shut Villarreal down briefly during last season and again in winter ball due to elbow inflammation. Despite his potential, Villarreal is a bit of a risk, even in deep leagues that use middle relievers, but he is still worth drafting in those formats. (Updated 1/4/13) |
