Rays pitcher Everett Teaford making push for spot on pitching staff
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(3/28/15) Rays pitcher Everett Teaford tossed two scoreless innings Friday, sending all six batters down in order. The 31-year-old is making management give him an extra look before deciding on the final pitching staff, reports MLB.com.
"I thought he threw the ball well. First pitch, Reimold was ready to go, but after that I thought Teaf did a nice job of mixing pitches just like he always does," manager Kevin Cash said.
Cash likes that Teaford can get out of nearly any situation that arises.
"He's been around enough that he's probably given up enough home runs and big hits so he knows how to handle it when he does deal with some adversity," said Cash. "I wouldn't have expected anything other than that from him. Just getting right back into the strike zone again."
Teaford has spent most of spring training working on his command and effectiveness.
"That's really been the biggest thing I wanted to do this spring is not walk anybody. If I'm going to get beat, make them beat me and up to this point, I really have," said Teaford.

|(3/22/15) Rays pitcher Everett Teaford surrendered two earned runs on three hits in three innings while striking out two in Sunday's 3-0 loss to the Blue Jays.
With the Rays dealing with multiple injuries to its starting pitchers, Teaford is in the mix to win a rotation spot early in the season. He's given up three earned runs in 9 2/3 innings this spring while striking out seven and issuing one walk.

|(3/20/15) The Rays optioned Burch Smith down to the minors after his Grapefruit League outing on Friday against the Blue Jays, according to Tampa Tribune.
Smith, who was viewed as an outside candidate for a rotation spot, was hit hard for six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three over 3 2/3 innings of work. The competition will be down to Nathan Karns, Matt Andriese, Mike Montgomery and Everett Teaford, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Rays down to five candidates for three open rotation spots

|(3/20/15) With pitcher Enny Romero getting optioned to the minors, there remains five candidates for three spots in the Rays' rotation, per MLB.com. They are Matt Andriese, Nathan Karns, Everett Teaford, Burch Smith and Mike Montgomery.
Montgomery is the only left-handed pitcher in the group, but manager Kevin Cash said that doesn't mean he has an advantage over the other pitchers.
"I don't think that's a priority," Cash said. "I think we're going to try and find what will be the best matchup for us. You factor in a lot of things, and if you look at our first couple of games, it's not like there's a pressing need for a left-handed pitcher in there.
"We're still working on the rotation and how everything will unfold."
