2011 Fantasy outlooks: San Francisco Giants
Were the Giants a one-hit wonder or are they built to compete for the long haul? Our Al Melchior take a close look at the defending champs to see where owners might want to look on Draft Day.
|When Brian Wilson was lost for the season a year ago when he needed Tommy John surgery, Santiago Casilla took over the closer's role for the Giants. Initially, Casilla cruised along, as he entered late June with a sub-2.00 ERA and 20 saves in 21 chances. Then things went sour, as he blew five saves in his next eight chances, as he battled through blisters. Eventually, Casilla moved back into a setup role, as Sergio Romo became the Giants' closer, but he didn't have the same command that he showed earlier in the season. Casilla will be in the setup role again in 2013, but owners shouldn't expect him to put up numbers similar to those he posted in early 2012. He has always had problems with wildness and has been inconsistent in his strikeout production. Casilla does induce a lot of grounders, so he can help with ERA as well as with holds, but he is not a top option for owners in leagues that use setup and middle men. (Updated 1/8/13) |
