Nishioka lands on DL in minors: Twins shortstop Tsuyoshi Nishioka was placed on the seven-day disabled list at Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday due to a sprained right ankle. He is batting .203 with three RBI and three stolen bases through 16 games with the Red Wings. "Nishi has a high ankle sprain, but I'm not sure how many days [he'll be out]," manager Ron Gardenhire told MLB.com. "So right now, [Brian] Dozier is the main guy in the infield. We'll let him get more at-bats." (Updated 04/24/2012)

Fantasy Analysis
Nishioka batted just .226 with 19 RBI and two stolen bases in 68 games for the Twins a year ago and could not win a spot on the roster this spring. This injury will likely slow his return to the majors and based upon his value in Fantasy at this point, continue to ignore the 27-year-old in all formats. (Updated 04/24/2012).
03/19/2012 10:37 Twins send hyped Nishioka to Triple-A to start season
The Minnesota Twins have assigned struggling infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka to Triple-A Rochester in hopes that the Japanese import can find his game in the minor leagues.
03/16/2012 23:15 Spring primer: Minnesota Twins
After going from first to worst in 2011, the Twins need bounce-back seasons from former MVPs Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer to have any hope in 2012.
Even importing a shortstop last year could not solve the Minnesota Twins' issues at the position. Tsuyoshi Nishioka was the latest player to fill the infield spot to begin the 2011 season after leaving his native Japan and signing a three-year contract with the team in December 2010. He was the ninth player to patrol short since the Twins traded Jason Bartlett to Tampa Bay after the 2007 season. However, his production did not carry over to Minnesota and he posted a paltry .226 batting average during an injury-plagued first year in the majors. Nishioka appeared in just 68 games because of a broken left leg that sidelined him for nearly two months at the beginning of the season. Entering the 2012 campaign, he has been supplanted in the starting lineup by 37-year-old Jamey Carroll and will only receive spot starts for the Twins this season -- if he makes the team. Nishioka could be open the year in the minors. Either way, Fantasy owners should not reach for Nishioka in the majority of drafts. (Updated 2/12/12)
