Tigers C Bryan Holaday has career-day on Thursday vs. Twins

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/14/15) Playing in his first game of the season, Tigers catcher Bryan Holaday had quite the afternoon against the Twins on Thursday. Holaday, who was recalled over the weekend when Alex Avila went on the disabled list, recorded a career-high three RBI as he went 3 for 5 on the afternoon.

Holaday hit the second home run of his career, a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth inning, and finished a triple shy of the cycle.

"When I hit it, it was about as good as I could," Holaday said, per MLive.com. "Then I saw (Eduardo) Escobar go back to the wall and I thought he was going to catch it. So I was happy when I saw it go over."

He will likely return to the bench on Friday, as James McCann has been the regular catcher since Avila's injury.

Tigers place C Alex Avila on DL, recall C Bryan Holaday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/9/15) The Tigers placed catcher Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, retroactive to May 7, due to a loose body in his left knee, the team announced.

Avila was scratched from Friday's lineup but was said to be dealing with a forearm contusion. He has hit .200/.342/.317 with two home runs and eight RBI while serving as the team's primary catcher against right-handed pitchers.

Avila and the Tigers will not decide on a course of action until getting a second opinion on his MRI, but he appears headed for athroscopic knee surgery, which could keep him out through the All-Star break, MLive.com reports.

"We don't know any type of timetable really," Avila said. "We're trying to basically figure out the course of action right now. But my expectation and my hope would be to be back and ready to go, good as new, for the second half. That would be my hope and I think that's a pretty realistic possibility."

The Tigers will recall catcher Bryan Holaday before Saturday's game to replace Avila on the active roster. He has hit .230/.278/.328 with one home run and nine RBI in 61 at-bats with Triple-A Toledo.

Unlike Avila, Holaday bats right-handed, as does catcher James McCann, who could be in for regular playing time against righties with Avila sidelined.

Tigers option Holaday to Triple-A, McCann wins backup catcher job

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/30/15) The Tigers announced Monday catcher Bryan Holaday was optioned to Triple-A Toledo. His demotion means James McCann will start the season as the primary backup to starting catcher Alex Avila, per MLB.com.

Tigers backup catcher Bryan Holaday tweaked his stance, swing

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2/26/15) Tigers backup catcher Bryan Holaday told reporters he has tweaked his stance and swing after experiencing an "eye-opening" 2014 campaign, according to the Detroit Free Press

"I've made a lot of adjustments; I feel better and I'm more confident," Holaday said. "I've done a little tweaking with my stance and my swing to make it more efficient. Basically shortened the swing to make my timing better."

Holaday hit .231/.266/.276 in 171 at-bats last season. Manager Brad Ausmus appears to be impressed by Holaday's adjustments at the plate early on.

"He looks good swinging the bat," Ausmus said. "It's early, but he looks good."

Bryan Holaday in, Alex Avila out of Wednesday lineup

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/21/14) Tigers backup catcher Bryan Holaday is in the lineup Thursday for the first time in a week. He is replacing starter Alex Avila for the afternoon game in Cleveland.

Holaday has performed well when given the chance. He has four multi-hit games in four of his last seven starts and boasts a .303 batting average.
