Twins' Molitor: 'Time is running out' for Josmil Pinto
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(3/29/15) Twins manager Paul Molitor said that "time is running out" for Josmil Pinto to break camp with the club.
Pinto has missed the last eight days after getting hit in the head three times by a backswing.
Pinto, who failed his last concussion test, will be evaluated again on Sunday. If he passes, he could play on Monday. Molitor warned that it may already be too late, however, per MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger.
Pinto has been competing with Chris Herrmann for the Twins' backup catcher spot. Herrmann is hitting .300 this spring with a homer and three RBI.
Twins' Chris Herrmann working to improve his hitting
|by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com|
|(3/12/15) Chris Herrmann knows that his hitting will have to make tremendous strides if he's going to break camp with the Twins.
His defense is fine, and his versatility to catch, play all three outfield spots and first base is certainly a plus. But for Herrmann, his slash line of 196/.264/.284 slash line in 97 major-league games has to show signs of improving prior to opening day.
"I know people want me to improve my bat, and I want to do that myself," Herrmann said, via MLB.com. "I know it helps out that I'm a utility guy, but at the end of the day, it's about hitting. And if I can swing the stick, I feel like I can make this team. So I'm doing everything I can."
Herrmann is competing for the backup catcher spot, though Josmil Pinto is still the favorite to win that job for now.
Twins' Molitor: Pinto, Herrmann Fryer competing for backup catcher spot
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(2/24/15) Twins manager Paul Molitor told reporters on Tuesday that there is a three-man race between Josmil Pinto, Chris Herrmann and Eric Fryer for the club's backup role behind Kurt Suzuki, per MLB.com.
"That's going to be an interesting competition," Molitor said. "There's different criteria you can consider. Do you want the guy that is going to be your best defender for 30-40 games or you want to have the offense and hopefully have enough defense? I'm open-minded."
At this point, Pinto may be the early favorite because of his threat at the plate. He hit 257/.339/.445 with 11 homers and 30 RBIs in 78 career games with Minnesota. Herrmann slashed .194/.264/.284 hitter in 97 games over parts of three years with the Twins. Fryer is hitting .246 in 50 career games.
Twins option Chris Herrmann down to Triple-A
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
|(7/18/14) The Twins optioned catcher Chris Herrmann to Triple-A Rochester Friday, in order to make room for the return of shortstop Danny Santana from the disabled list.
Hermann has made a few stints with the Twins this season, but is hitting just .143/.200/.143 in 42 at-bats.
