Fantasy Analysis
Segura enters the season ranked as the No. 55-rated prospect by Baseball America. The 22-year-old finished up at Class A Inland Empire last year as he hit .281 with three homers and 21 RBI over 185 at-bats after being promoted from rookie ball. Segura may only be in the minors because the Angels are set in their middle infield. He's raked at every level in the minors, including at Triple-A Salt Lake in 2009 as a 19-year-old when he hit .421 over 19 at-bats. Segura is definitely a long-term Fantasy keeper. 02/29/2012 11:34 2012 Draft Prep: Top 50 Fantasy prospects
Which prospects should you circle on your Draft Day cheat sheets in 2012? Our Scott White unveils his Top 50 prospects and identifies which players will make an impact on your Fantasy teams this summer.
After batting .313 with 10 homers, 50 steals and an .829 OPS to emerge as a top prospect in 2010, Jean Segura didn't get a chance to progress in 2011, missing three months of the regular season with a hamstring injury. But he returned as good as new in August and had a strong showing in the Arizona Fall League to confirm that he does indeed deserve to remain among the top prospects at his position. Why exactly? Hey, his career .316 batting average in the minors speaks for itself. He's also a good base-stealer and rarely strikes out, so even as a 12-to-15-homer guy, he'd be a significant Fantasy asset. And if his doubles and triples power eventually leads to more, even better. Segura is relatively new to shortstop and is no guarantee to stay there, but even if he doesn't, he'll simply slide over to second base. Either way, he profiles as a top Fantasy option at a weak position. He's one of the safest long-term keepers you'll find on Draft Day. Expect him to compete for a starting job as early as 2013.
