| Gary Sanchez continuing to develop |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (4/15/13) Yankees catcher prospect Gary Sanchez is off to a promising start for Class A Tampa. Sanchez, who is considered the team's top prospect by MLB.com, is batting .350 (14 for 40) through 10 games, which included a two-homer performance Saturday against Daytona.
Sanchez also has four doubles, eight RBI and is slugging .600.
"I'm just thinking about the middle of the field," Sanchez said through a translator, per MLB.com. "I'm trying to make sure I have a good pitch to hit all the time. That's something I've been working on when taking batting practice and working with the hitting coaches in the cage -- getting good pitches and staying to the middle of the field."
One of the biggest hurdles left in Sanchez's development is breaking down the language barrier with pitchers. Speaking English has proven difficult so far for the 20-year-old Dominican catcher.
"He's got to work a little more with the pitchers and get to know them better, but that's a process you learn over the years," Tampa manager Luis Sojo said. "He's making that adjustment. That'll come. Defensively, he's got a plus arm. Like I said, his relationship with the pitchers is the most important thing for him. He's got to fight to learn to improve his communication with the pitchers. As a catcher, that's very important."

| 'Zero doubt' about Sanchez |
| (2/5/13) After a down campaign in 2011, Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez made some noise last season in the minors by batting .290 with 18 home runs and 85 RBI. He also slugged a healthy .485 between two Class A stops and stole 15 bases. New York senior vice president of baseball operations Mark Newman told MLB.com on Tuesday that Sanchez has made strides defensively as well. "He can really throw. He can catch the ball," Newman said. "He's got good lower body flexibility. It's a really hard position to play. He's made great improvement over the last two years. He's got the physical tools and the mental capabilities to do it. He's a catcher. We have zero doubt about that."

2012 Fantasy outlooks: New York Yankees
Do the Yankees still have a ton of Fantasy firepower? Are you kidding? Scott White breaks down the Bronx Bombers in a Fantasy team outlook and concludes that if you draft one of them, you've pretty much landed a sure thing.

| With the Yankees' decision to trade Jesus Montero last offseason and inability to re-sign Russell Martin this offseason, Gary Sanchez suddenly has a wide-open path to the majors. Unfortunately, at age 20, he's not at a point where he can take advantage of it. Sure, he's done just fine in the minors so far, demonstrating the expected power and getting his batting average back up to .290 with an improved two-strike approach, but he didn't advance to high Class A Tampa until the second half last year. He's still a work in progress, and as a work in progress, he doesn't have a chance of reaching the big leagues until some point in 2014. Clearly, he's the player the Yankees want behind the plate long-term, though, so they likely won't delay him much longer than that. As he continues to evolve as a hitter, he'll be able to tap into his plus power even more, potentially becoming as highly regarded as Travis d'Arnaud by the time he's ready to do debut. If you miss out on d'Arnaud and Mike Zunino in a long-term keeper league, Sanchez isn't a bad consolation prize even though isn't ready to contribute just yet. (Updated 1/4/13) |
