Red Sox sent two to Triple-A
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/28/14) The Red Sox optioned pitcher Drake Britton and catcher Ryan Lavarnway to Triple-A Pawtucket Friday.

Britton posted a 6.52 ERA and 9:4 K:BB ratio in 9 2/3 innings this spring. Lavarnway, who was previously reported to be on the trade block, hit .289/.357/.474 with two home runs and five RBI in 38 at-bats.

Report: Red Sox shopping Ryan Lavarnway
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/17/14) The Red Sox are shopping catcher Ryan Lavarnway because of a crowded situation for playing time at the major-league level and Triple-A Pawtucket, an industry source told CSNNE.com.

"They're making it known he's available," a veteran National League talent evaluator said of the Red Sox.

The Red Sox have begun to work Lavarnway at first base, but his future with the team is starting to look bleak.

"I think most teams now see him as a No. 3 catcher," said an American League evaluator of Lavarnway "He could play a little first and DH, and be available if you needed someone behind the plate."

Ryan Lavarnway could see time at first base
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(2/26/14) John Farrell said Wednesday that he would not hesitate to put Red Sox catcher Ryan Lavarnway at first base, the Boston Globe has reported.

Lavarnway has apparently improved defensively at that position and he hit well enough in 2013 to warrant such consideration, though he lacks power. He batted .299 last season, but just three of his 23 hits went for extra bases.

Ryan Lavarnway to see work at first base in spring
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1/31/14) The Red Sox will work catcher Ryan Lavarnway at first base in addition to his normal catching duties during spring training, the Boston Globe reports.

The team discussed using Lavarnway at catcher regularly before signing A.J. Pierzynksi, so he'll try to increase his positional flexibility during the spring as the Red Sox put together their final 25-man roster. He hit .299/.329/.429 with one home run and 14 RBI in 77 at-bats with the Red Sox last season.

Ryan Lavarnway among Red Sox's catching options
by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(11/27/13) The Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox have had discussions about turning to Ryan Lavarnway as the team's primary catcher next season. While the Red Sox are still exploring the free agent and trade markets, they are keeping the 26-year-old Lavarnway among their options.

The Red Sox used Lavarnway in just 25 games in 2013, and he batted .299 but with only one home run in 77 at-bats.
