Tigers' Ausmus using RP Alex Wilson in a variety of situations
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(5/23/15) Since his recall from the minors in late April, Tigers reliever Alex Wilson has quietly put together a nice string of outings. He is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 10 appearances.
"I can't really give you his role because I use him all over the place," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Thursday, per MLive.com. "He can pitch -- he was going to go back out for the next inning [Thursday against the Astros] if we don't score, so he would have been out for a third -- long like that, he can get a couple of righties out if we need it in the seventh or eighth. He doesn't seem to be bothered by the tight game, so he's got a lot of versatility."
Wilson's two-inning outing Thursday was the sixth time this season he has pitched longer than an inning and the fourth time he's gone at least two frames.
"Ya know, I'm just doing what I can," Wilson said. "I'm a grinder -- that's what I've always done. I feel like there is a little bit of a role, I am kind of the long guy, but the kind of guy you can throw in and try and get a couple of ground ball or couple quick outs if need be. I'm OK with being the swingman of the bullpen, I could you could call it. But I'm happy with it."

|(5/21/15) Tigers pitcher Alex Wilson earned his third career win on Thursday, as the Tigers were walk-off winners against the Astros. Wilson came on to pitch the 10th and 11th innings, allowing one hit and striking out two in his two innings.
Wilson (1-0) has been great out of the bullpen for the Tigers. He's made seven appearances this month and hasn't allowed a run in any of them. He holds a 1.50 ERA in 18 innings pitched overall this season.
Tigers recall Alex Wilson, option Ian Krol to Triple-A Toledo
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(4/23/15) The Tigers recalled right-hander Alex Wilson from Triple-A Toledo and optioned left-hander Ian Krol down to Toledo prior to Thursday's contest against the Yankees, per the team's official website.
Wilson pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts in the minors. Krol held a 4.76 ERA over 5 2/3 innings with the big-league club.
"As far as I know, I got called up cause they needed an arm," Wilson said Thursday, per MLive.com. "I watched the game yesterday as well as everyone else, they ran through some guys. I'm here to help as long as I can."
Tigers option Lobstein, Wilson, Zeid to Triple-A; reassign Cabrera
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(3/24/15) The Tigers optioned pitchers Kyle Lobstein, Alex Wilson and Josh Zeid to Triple-A Toledo Tuesday while also reassigning pitcher Alberto Cabrera to minor-league camp, the team announced.
Lobstein allowed four earned runs in 10 innings this spring. Wilson surrendered 10 runs (six earned) in 6 2/3 innings. Zeid gave up six earned runs in 7 2/3 innings. The moves leave the Tigers with 39 players in major-league camp.
Tigers bullpen all but set for opening day
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(2/28/15) Tigers manager Brad Ausmus is feeling confident about his pitching staff headed into the start of the season. So much so, that he's expecting six of the seven spots to already be taken by Joe Nathan, Joakim Soria, Bruce Rondon, Al Alburquerque and Joba Chamberlain, reports MLive.com.
"Those six, it'd be surprising if they weren't on the team," Ausmus said Friday morning. "Something strange would have to happen just based on their performances from the past."
This leaves Alex Wilson, Josh Zeid and Buck Farmer all battling for the final slot in the bullpen.
"You're always concerned about injuries," Ausmus said. "I think that's where the depth comes into play, where, if something unexpected comes up, we have a lot of arms we feel like can produce at the major league level. ... If something happens at any time, we feel that we have a quality arm that we can slide right in."
