| Matt Davidson laboring through power drought |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/6/13) It's been quite a while since Diamondbacks third base prospect Matt Davidson hit a home run for Triple-A Reno. After hitting three home runs in his first 10 games, Davidson has gone 17 games through Sunday without a home run.
Davidson, who has managed 20-plus home runs the last two seasons, is batting .257 with a .404 slugging percentage through 27 games. He also has one triple, five doubles, 11 runs and 17 RBI. He has struck out 39 times.

| Matt Davidson focused on 'good at-bats' |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (4/10/13) Diamondbacks third base prospect Matt Davidson is having a torrid start to the season at Triple-A Reno. Davidson has hit safely in his first five games, batting .429 (9 for 21).
Davidson, who is considered the team's fourth-best prospect by MLB.com, also has two homers, four walks, five runs and six RBI. He's only struck out three times.
"All I want to do right now is put together some good at-bats," he said, per MLB.com. "Sure, I focus on my strikeout-to-walk ratio to try and take my walks. But you've got to keep that main focus on the team and doing whatever you need to do to help it win. Everything else just becomes easier if you do it that way."

| Davidson's progression on 'pace' |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (2/10/13) MLB.com reports Diamondbacks third base prospect Matt Davidson, who is one of the team's top offensive prospect, has made great strides with his defense in the last year. "He's a big strong guy with a powerful swing," Diamondbacks minor league director Mike Bell said. "Sometimes those guys have a little bit of a tendency to strike out. He drives in runs, he gets big hits. He's progressing at the right pace."

2012 Draft Prep: Analyzing one-hit wonders
How can you tell the difference between a legitimate breakout performance and an aberration? Our Scott White lays it all out for you as he analyzes one-hit wonders.
|
| The Diamondbacks found enough Josh Bell, Ryan Wheeler and Chris Johnson types to cover for them at third base in 2012 that they were able to avoid forcing the issue with Matt Davidson, who is still widely regarded as their top hitting prospect. As a result, Davidson gets to continue his slow and steady climb up the minor-league ladder, where he hasn't gotten a midseason promotion in two years. He seems to be progressing well enough. His power numbers were a little underwhelming in the hitter-friendly California League in 2010 and 2011, but he was able to improve them in the more balanced Southern League last year. Power is supposed to be his best attribute, but his solid approach and ability to handle secondary pitches should make him a well-rounded hitter in time. His numbers don't jump out at you the way Jedd Gyorko's or Nick Castellanos' do, but he's not much farther from making an impact in the majors. If you want someone who you can trust for 25-plus homers at third base every year, Davidson is the long-term keeper for you. And considering a Johnson-Eric Chavez platoon is all that stands in his way, a midseason promotion isn't out of the question. (Updated 1/4/13) |
