Tigers prospect Daniel Fields off to promising start at Triple-A

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/20/15) Tigers outfield prospect Daniel Fields is off to a great start at Triple-A Toledo, batting .343 (12 for 35) with one triple, one home run, three RBI, four doubles and eight runs in 10 games. The Tigers are excited to see Fields doing well after a few injury-plagued seasons.

"Fields has been swinging the bat real well and obviously hitting with some power," Tigers assistant general manager Al Avila said, per The Detroit News. "He's got all the tools to make it work. I think the biggest thing is for him to simply stay healthy."

While the 24-year-old prospect is off to a nice start this season, Toledo manager Larry Parrish said Fields is still not a polished product.

"He's still a work in progress as far as staying inside the ball, and staying through the pitch," Parrish said. "He's not rolling over the ball as much. He still, sometimes, wants to spin on the ball and the bat comes around the ball. He takes some pitches he could drive and rolls 'em over, or hooks them foul. And when a good pitcher gives you one of those and you hit it foul, it just gives him one more chance to make a good pitch on you.

"Arm-wise, he's slightly below-average, but a lot of center fielders don't have real strong arms. He's more of a (Curtis) Granderson type, defensively, so for him to play out there he's going to have to hit."

Tigers option Valdez, VerHagen, Machado, Fields, Bernard to minors

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/20/15) The Tigers optioned Jose Valdez, Drew VerHagen, Dixon Machado and Daniel Fields to Triple-A Toledo and Wynton Bernard to Double-A Erie, according to MLive.com. The team also reassigned Tim Melville, Austin Green and Miguel Gonzalez to minor-league camp.

Justin Miller among handful of Tigers sent down

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3/14/14) One-time premier pitching prospect Justin Miller is among five players dispatched to the minors by the Tigers on Friday. He is headed to Triple-A Toledo along with first baseman Jordan Lennerton and center fielder Daniel Fields. Third baseman Francisco Martinez has been assigned to Double-A Erie while second baseman Devon Travis was sent to minor league camp.

Miller was 9-1 with a 1.83 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 69 innings at the Double-A level in 2011 before Tommy John surgery halted his progress.

Daniel Fields not a candidate in left

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3/5/14) Tigers outfielder Daniel Fields is not considered a candidate to replace Andy Dirks in left, according to MLB.com.

Fields is "a notch below" other candidates due to his lack of experience, according to manager Brad Ausmus. The 23-year-old has yet to make his major-league debut.

Tigers add seven to 40-man roster

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11/20/13) The Tigers added first baseman Jordan Lennerton, shortstop Eugenio Suarez, outfielders Daniel Fields and Steven Moya and pitchers Kyle Lobstein, Jose Valdez and Justin Miller to the 40-man roster Wednesday.

Lennerton hit .278/.382/.430 with 17 home runs and 57 RBI in 514 at-bats with Triple-A Toledo. Suarez hit .264/.347/.396 with 10 home runs, 57 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 545 at-bats between high Class A Lakeland and Double-A Erie.

Fields hit .284/.356/.435 with 10 home runs, 58 RBI and 24 stolen bases in 457 at-bats with Double-A Erie. Moya hit .255/.296/.433 with 12 home runs and 55 RBI in 365 at-bats with high Class A Lakeland.

Lobstein went 13-7 with a 3.27 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 148:52 K:BB ratio in 167 2/3 innings over 28 starts between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo. Valdez went 2-2 with a 2.74 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 67:34 K:BB ratio and 33 saves in 49 1/3 innings between Class A West Michigan and high Class-A Lakeland.

Miller was signed in September and has missed most of the last two seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2012.
