James Paxton turning the corner at Triple-A

(5/6/13) Mariners starting pitcher prospect James Paxton improved to 2-2 for Triple-A Tacoma in his last start Friday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk in five innings. He managed a season-high nine strikeouts.

Paxton has a 5.19 ERA and .275 opponents' batting average through six starts. He's been much better lately, however, posting a 2.81 ERA in his last two starts. He also has 14 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings in that span. Paxton has struck out 31 batters and issued 13 walks in 26 innings. Paxton is considered the Mariners' fifth-best prospect by MLB.com.

Mariners re-assign Taijuan Walker, James Paxton, Jhonny Nunez

(3/14/13) The Mariners announced Thursday that pitchers Taijuan Walker, James Paxton and Jhonny Nunez have been re-assigned to minor-league camp.

Ranked as baseball's 18th-best prospect by Baseball America and fifth-best prospect by MLB.com this offseason, Walker allowed four earned runs on seven hits and five walks with four strikeouts in seven innings this spring.

Paxton, who also made the top 100 in both prospect lists, allowed six earned runs on six hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings with just one strikeout this spring. Nunez pitched just two innings, allowing seven runs (four earned).

(10/10/12) Mariners pitching prospect James Paxton finished 2012 on a high note, coming back from a month-long absence for a sore knee to go 6-1 with a 2.40 ERA in his final 11 starts at Double-A Jackson. According to the Seattle Times, the 23-year-old will have a chance of winning a job out of spring training.
