Danny Santana leaves with back strain
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
|(9/6/14) Twins outfielder Danny Santana left Saturday's game with a back strain, according to the St. Paul Pioneer-Press.
Santana injured himself while making a throw in the outfield. He remained in the game initially, but was taken out for a pinch hitter before his next at-bat.
|2014 summary: A little more than a month into the season, Danny Santana saw his first major league action, taking over as the Twins' starting shortstop after Pedro Florimon was demoted. He would eventually see most of his playing time in center field, and Santana's bat, as well as his versatility, earned him a regular spot in the lineup. Though he had never hit .300 at any minor league stop, Santana ended his rookie season with a .319 batting average. The speedster also settled in as the Twins'leadoff hitter, producing 70 runs and 20 stolen bases. Even though his time in the minors and a midseason knee injury limited Santana to 110 games, he had the ninth-highest Rotisserie value and 15th-highest Fantasy points total among shortstops.|
Playing time status: New Twins manager Paul Molitor has said he wants Santana to be the team's shortstop, though he is likely to be a regular, regardless of where he plays.
2015 outlook: Santana was surprisingly good at all aspects of his offensive game, but it's not clear if his progress is sustainable. He wasn't an efficient base stealer in the minors, and didn't hit for much power or an exceptional average. Given that Santana didn't hit flies for great distance on average and struck out in nearly one-quarter of his at-bats, it's a dubious proposition that he will hit double-digit home runs or bat .300 this season. But at the weak shortstop position, a regressed version of Santana is still a sure-fire top 10 option worthy of targeting in the middle rounds.
