Twins' Danny Santana learning to play multiple positions

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(3/2/15) Danny Santana came to the Twins in 2007 playing primarily shortstop. Now, Santana is playing in the outfield and learning how to transition to a new position on the field.

"I didn't know how to play the outfield and I needed a lot of work," he said to MLB.com. "It wasn't hard, because I have the ability to play many positions. But the hard part was being in center field and throwing to the bases. At shortstop, you throw from different angles. In the outfield, you need to be on top to throw."

Santana hit .319 with 40 RBI and 70 runs scored in 405 plate appearances in 2014.

"There's a lot of people here who believed in Danny Santana's future for a long time. We were able to get a glimpse of that last year," manager Paul Molitor said. "I have a lot of confidence in that kid. He's going about his business very professionally. He's really a good listener and applier. Some guys listen well and have trouble taking it out there. He's pretty good at taking information and putting it into play."

Twins' Santana skips winter ball to focus on strength and conditioning

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/24/15) Twins shortstop Danny Santana decided to skip playing in the Dominican Winter League this offseason to concentrate on strength and conditioning, according to the Pioneer Press. Santana said he added seven pounds of muscle through regular workouts with Dominican trainer Franklin Reynoso.

"Sometimes it was 2-1/2 or three hours," Santana said Tuesday. "I feel good. We worked a lot on my shoulders and my legs."

Santana added he didn't do any outfield work this offseason and spent all of his time working on drills at shortstop, as he will be competing with Eduardo Escobar for the starting shortstop job this spring.

Santana, Escobar to compete to be Twins' starting shortstop

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/27/15) While Danny Santana is considered the front-runner to be the Twins' starting shortstop, first-year manager Paul Molitor said nothing has been decided yet. Santana will compete with Eduardo Escobar for the starting job this spring.

"It's probably been one of the more awkward things for me this winter in dealing with that situation," Molitor said, per MLB.com. "Obviously, I have to go in there open-minded about how it will play out. I can't say Santana will be the shortstop because things can change. Escobar deserves an opportunity to play and whether it's spotting around the organization or he has to go back to shortstop, I can't tell you it all will work out."

Escobar started a team-high 86 games at shortstop in 2014 for Minnesota. He made it clear he wants to play every day, but is willing to play where Molitor needs him.

"This season is important for me," Escobar said. "I'm coming in ready to play. I don't know if I'm going to be the starting shortstop or not, but I've been working hard to be ready for spring training. If Molitor wants me to play shortstop, or wherever, I'm ready for it."

Santana said he is excited he is moving back to shortstop after making a team-high 62 starts in center field last year. He's been fielding 200 grounders per day in the Dominican Republic to get ready for the season.

"I'm very happy about playing shortstop. I was waiting for that moment," Santana said. "Shortstop is my natural position. I just need to keep working and I can do the same thing as last year."

Danny Santana ready to roll for Thursday opener

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(9/11/14) Twins center fielder Danny Santana has returned to the lineup for the first game of a Thursday doubleheader in Cleveland. He has been sidelined since Sunday with a back ailment.

Santana returns on a roll. He had 13 hits in 33 at-bats with five multi-hit performances in seven games before going down.

Glen Perkins, Danny Santana expected to be ready Wednesday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9/9/14) Twins general manager Terry Ryan said Tuesday that closer Glen Perkins and outfielder Danny Santana are expected to be ready to play Wednesday, the Star Tribune reports.

Santana has been sidelined since Saturday with a back injury. Perkins hasn't pitched since Thursday with a neck issue.
