Juan Lagares inching closer to securing leadoff role for Mets?
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(3/18/15) Mets outfielder Juan Lagares has performed well offensively through the first few weeks of the spring training schedule. He is batting .407 (11 for 27) with a .467 on-base percentage, .593 slugging percentage, 1.059 OPS, one triple, three doubles, three walks, five runs and one RBI in nine games.
Despite his strong showing at the plate, Mets manager Terry Collins isn't ready to name Lagares the team's leadoff hitter.
“We haven’t really decided yet,” Collins said, per the New York Post. “I think he’s done a great job. He’s worked very hard on it. … We sure like the progress he’s made.”
Mets' Juan Lagares taking it easy with his elbow
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
|(3/5/15) Mets outfielder Juan Lagares is taking it easy with his elbow thus far, according to MLB.com.
Lagares missed the final two weeks of 2014 due to an elbow injury, but said he doing well now. "I feel great right now," Lagares said. "I feel 100 percent. I just want to take it easy -- not easy, but I don't want to throw everything I've got right now."
Lagares has had opportunities to throw out some base-runners this spring, but has erred on the side of caution. Manager Terry Collins said he's completely fine with that strategy.
"He did it the right way and I'm real proud of him," Collins said. "He could have sent a message to everybody -- 'Look, I'm fine.' And he was smart enough to say, 'I'll worry about it in April.'"
Lagares, 25, hit .281/.321/.382 over 416 at-bats last year.
Mets' Juan Lagares (elbow) to start against Braves on Wednesday
|by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com|
|(3/2/15) Mets outfielder Juan Lagares will make the trip to Orlando and start in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Braves, according to ESPN New York.
Lagares will not play in Tuesday's instrasquad scrimmage, however.
Lagares sprained his elbow and had to be shut down near the end of the 2014 season. Though there are concerns about his injury popping back up, everything appears to be OK with Lagares for the time being.
Mets worried about Juan Lagares' elbow
|by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com|
|(3/1/15) Concerned over Juan Lagares' elbow, the Mets will monitor how Lagares' elbow reacts to spring training, reports NJ.com.
Lagares suffered an elbow sprain last season, which ended his season in September.
|2014 summary: Two disabled list stints and a mid-September shutdown limited Juan Lagares to 116 games, but even so he just missed out on being a top 60 Rotisserie outfielder. That might not sound like much of an achievement, but it shows that the Gold Glove outfielder can do enough offensively to be relevant in mixed leagues. Speed is Lagares' main asset, and he stole 13 bases and racked up 18 infield hits for the Mets. Though he is among the least imposing home run threats in the majors, Lagares had enough gap power and speed to muster a .281 batting average.|
Playing time status: Lagares missed the final 10 games of the season with a sprained elbow, but he was fully recovered by November. He is expected to be ready for spring training.
2015 outlook: While Lagares was verging on viable for standard mixed Rotisserie leagues last season, he did so by achieving his batting average upside. With a modest dip likely in 2015, he will probably be slightly less valuable than he was last season. Lagares should be only drafted be drafted in deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats.
