Dodgers snag strong starters in deal with Marlins, Braves
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(7/30/15) The Dodgers have snagged several veterans in a just-completed three-way trade filled with prospects, per Yahoo Sports.
They receive starting pitchers Alex Wood and Bronson Arroyo and relievers Luis Avilan and Jim Johnson, as well as minor league utility infielder Jose Peraza from the Braves. They also get first baseman Michael Morse and starting pitcher Mat Latos from the Marlins.
The Dodgers sent several prospects to both teams. First baseman Hector Olivera, lefty Paco Rodriguez and starting pitcher Zachary Bird head to Atlanta while pitchers Victor Araujo and Angel Guzman go to Miami.
The keys are Wood and Latos, who will likely immediately join the Los Angeles rotation, as well as Johnson, who has been used as the Atlanta closer.
The 24-year-old Wood hasn't performed as well this season as he did in 2014, but he is 7-6 with a 3.54 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 119 1/3 innings.
Latos is 4-7 with a 4.48 ERA, but has come on strong. He has allowed just six earned runs in his last 26 innings pitched.
Johnson has nine saves, but will almost certainly be used behind Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen.

Braves P Shelby Miller strikes out 8 in no-decision
|by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com|
|(5/11/15) Braves pitcher Shelby Miller pitched seven strong innings but earned a no-decision in Monday night's 2-1 win over the Reds.
Miller only allowed one run but exited the game with the game tied at 1-1. Luis Avilan entered the game in the eighth inning and earned the win.
Miller struck out eight batters and walked two. He only allowed three hits and now has an impressive 1.60 ERA. This is Miller's third game in a row where he's recorded at least eight strikeouts. He now has 39 for the season.
"The first two innings I was kind of rushing a little bit," Miller said. "[Pierzynski] saw some things with my mechanics, which was nice. After that we settled in pretty good. I was just trying to put up zeroes. We did a good job of that as well."
Miller's next start is projected for Sunday against the Marlins.

"I feel like all the work I've done in the offseason is really paying off," Avilan said. "I feel really good with my bullpen [sessions] and my live BP. I've been feeling really good with my pitches. The location has been really good, better than last year."
Avilan made 10 appearances in winter ball after posting a 4.57 ERA and 25:21 K:BB ratio in 43 1/3 innings in 2014.
