| Slump costs Darin Ruf opportunity |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (6:23 pm ET) The Phillies had an open roster spot with Chase Utley on the disabled list Thursday, but a poorly timed slump cost Darin Ruf a chance to get back to the majors. Ruf is hitting .103 over the last seven games heading into play Friday.
The fact that Ruf can only play in the outfield or first base also hurt his chances.
"I think the better fit was someone who could play all over the field," assistant GM Scott Proefrock told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "We’ve got two (interleague) games. It would be hard to find (Ruf) a place to play, and it probably wouldn’t be the right fit."
Ruf has a .772 on-base plus slugging percent at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, with a .262 batting average, a career-worst mark.

| Phillies not ready to call on Darin Ruf |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/21/13) The Phillies' struggles offensively have been well-documented and Ruben Amaro Jr. told The Philadelphia Inquirer Tuesday he's looked into ways to improve the lineup. However, he said he doesn't feel Darin Ruf, who was competing for a starting job in the outfield, is the solution to bolster a struggling lineup.
"(Darin) Ruf has done well, although he’s coming off a little bit of a slump lately," Amaro said. "Ruf has done OK, but he still needs work in the outfield. While he’s done OK offensively, I’m not sure he’s better than the options we have."
Although, Amaro said Ruf is probably the top option at first base in case something long-term happens to Ryan Howard, who is battling a knee injury.
"I would think so. He’s played first base about twice a week, so we know he can do that," Amaro said.

| Darin Ruf growing comfortable in left |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (5/12/13) It was only six weeks ago that Phillies prospect Darin Ruf lost in his bid for a spot on the opening day roster because of his unpredictability in left field. But the 26-year-old slugger, who was drafted as a first baseman, has become more polished at the position for Triple-A Lehigh Valley to beckon praise from within the organization.
"He's been great, and he's getting better," Lehigh Valley manager Dave Brundage told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "He's good enough right now to play left field. He hasn't been out there that long, and for the strides he has made and the adjustments he has made, he looks so much more comfortable."
In 22 games in left field this season, Ruf has made just one error in 42 chances while also playing eight games at first without a miscue. He has also discovered his groove at the plate, recording four homers and 13 RBI over his past 12 games.

| Darin Ruf finally hits stride at Triple-A |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/6/13) Phillies outfielder Darin Ruf is starting to find his hitting stroke at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. After belting one home run in his first 20 games, Ruf has gone deep three times in his last seven games.
Ruf is also batting .355 (11 for 31) in his last seven games as well, raising his season average to .250. His hot streak began with a two-homer outing April 28. Ruf has nine doubles, 14 runs and 15 RBI in 27 games.

| Darin Ruf wins game, loses job battle |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (3/22/13) Phillies outfielder Darin Ruf went 2 for 4 and clubbed a game-winning, solo homer in the ninth inning to lift Philadelphia to a 7-6 win over Atlanta in Grapefruit League play Friday. Ruf, who also drew a walk and scored three times, recorded his second homer of the spring off Daniel Rodriguez.
Following his late heroics, the Phillies optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, essentially providing Domonic Brown the starting job in left field for the upcoming season. "He's gonna be a big-time hitter," manager Charlie Manuel said of Ruf. "I think he's got a bright career."

| The minor-league leader in home runs in 2012 wasn't Wil Myers or Miguel Sano or any of those other big-name prospects you hear so much about. It was Darin Ruf, who, at age 26, might strike you as a Quadruple-A player along the lines of a Kila Ka'aihue or Mike Hessman. But unlike that notorious duo, he's actually in the mix for a starting job in 2013. With a couple unfavorable contracts already on the books, the Phillies have gone into penny-pinching mode, which could make an unexpectedly productive bat like Ruf just what the doctor ordered in left field. Of course, the Phillies did bring in Delmon Young late in the offseason, lengthening Ruf's odds. His natural position is first base, so he'll have to prove he's not a liability in the outfield before he can win a roster spot. His brief audition there last September went well enough, though, and he certainly didn't disappoint with the bat, collecting six extra-base hits -- including three homers -- in 33 at-bats. It's true he could end up being exposed with more at-bats, a la Bryan LaHair, but if nothing else, Ruf's power potential makes him worth a flier in NL-only leagues. (Updated 1/22/13) |
