Brad Boxberger blows save, picks up win vs. Cubs
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(8/8/14) Rays pitcher Brad Boxberger blew a save opportunity in the ninth inning Friday but ended up earning a win after giving up one earned run on two hits in two innings and striking out three in his team's 4-3, 10-inning victory over the Cubs.

Boxberger (3-1) watched Jake McGee pitch the eighth inning before getting his chance in the ninth, but the Cubs were able to tie the game on a one-out single in the ninth. He remained in to get an at-bat in the top of the 10th before pitching a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning to finish off the game. He owns a 2.11 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 74:16 K:BB ratio in 47 innings.

New pitcher enters Rays closer mix
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/3/14) Two days after their primary setup man, Joel Peralta, blew a save and one day after their former closer, Grant Balfour, recorded his 11th, the Rays turned to Brad Boxberger in the ninth inning of a three-run game Wednesday.

All this coming off a weekend when Jake McGee appeared to lock up the role.

Frankly, if the Rays prefer not to confine their top lefty to the ninth inning, I'm not sure Boxberger isn't the best choice. He has closer stuff and, after struggling with his control in previous stints in the majors, appears to have harnessed it. In 31 appearances, he has a 2.87 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 13.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

What more could you want from a closer?

Of course, McGee's numbers are even better, and Joe Maddon clearly hasn't turned the page from Balfour yet. Juan Carlos Oviedo has gotten a save since the Rays went closer by committee and also has experience in the role. Something tells me that if the Rays haven't settled on any one pitcher yet, Boxberger's save Wednesday doesn't change that.

But you shouldn't dismiss him as just a fringe candidate either. He's a contender to fill the role full-time.

Brad Boxberger gets his turn to close out game for Rays
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/2/14) It was Brad Boxberger's turn to close out a game Wednesday at N.Y. Yankees as part of the Rays' closer-by-committee approach. The right-handed reliever picked up his first save this season and second career save during a 6-3 win.

Boxberger retired the side in order in the ninth inning, which included strikeouts of Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter. He now has 48 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings and lowered his ERA to 2.87.

Brad Boxberger earns first win Monday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/1/14) Rays pitcher Brad Boxberger secured his first win of the season Monday, striking out one over two perfect innings during his team's 4-3, 12-inning win over the Yankees.

The Rays decided to stick with Boxberger after a 1-2-3 11th inning and a run in the top in the 12th inning to give the team the lead, and they were rewarded with another clean inning. He owns a 2.97 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 46:12 K:BB ratio in 30 1/3 innings.

Brad Boxberger gives up walk-off homer
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/16/14) Rays reliever Brad Boxberger entered Thursday's game against the Angels in a precarious situation, and ultimately took the loss as the Angels went on to win, 6-5.

Boxberger entered the game with runners on the corners, no outs, and Mike Trout at the plate. He faced just one batter, as Trout took him deep for a three-run, game-winning home run.

Boxberger took the blown save, his first of the season, though Grant Balfour did much of the work in losing the game. He saw his ERA rise to 2.53 in 10 2/3 innings of work.
