Preseason Outlook

After fading into obscurity in 2007 and 2008, Overbay at least made a whimper in 2009, posting an .838 OPS. The Blue Jays didn't even give him a chance to play against left-handers, though -- a decision that, considering his .905 OPS against righties, likely had everything to do with his resurgence. Unfortunately, that platoon role more or less destroys his value in mixed leagues. His high walk rate combined with his ability to hit 15-plus home runs makes him worth your time in AL-only leagues, and he's a decent stopgap whenever he faces all right-handers. But his relatively low ceiling makes him not worth the trouble in mixed leagues. (Updated 12/9/09)
