Overbay needs games like these to keep him in the lineup and with Paul Goldschmidt struggling, manager Kirk Gibson just might start playing Overbay more. Wade Miley wiggled out of a couple jams while pitching into the seventh inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped the Los Angeles Dodgers' five-game winning streak with a 5-1 victory Tuesday night.
Lyle Overbay, who turned 35 years old during the offseason, signed a one-year deal to remain with the Diamondbacks last December. However, he will serve as a bench player as Arizona is entrusting slugging phenom Paul Goldschmidt with the starting job at first base. Overbay appeared in 121 games last season, but his bat speed plummeted and he struck out 88 times while compiling a .234 batting average. His nine homers, including just one with Arizona, was the lowest total of his career when playing at least 100 games. Overbay still has the ability to draw a walk as evidenced by his .354 on-base percentage, but playing time will remain at a premium for the aging veteran. Fantasy owners should not consider him a worthwhile option outside of deeper NL-only Rotisserie formats in 2012 drafts. (Updated 2/8/12)
