03/28/2012 18:51 2012 Draft Prep: Why spring matters
In many cases spring training statistics are irrelevant, but there are some players who can ride a hot spring into a breakout season. Our Nando Di Fino shares his take on some spring standouts.
The Red Sox made one of the biggest splashes of last offseason when they signed Carl Crawford to a seven-year, $142 million deal, but the excitement didn't last long. He got off to a painfully slow start in Boston and then he missed a month in the middle of the season with a strained hamstring. His cold April and DL stint aside, it wasn't a total disaster of a season for Crawford, as he put up a .279/.309/.447 line from May 1 forward. However, Crawford walked just 23 times all season and attempted only 24 steals, both uncharacteristically low totals. Owners skittish about Crawford's ability to bounce back now have another concern: He underwent wrist surgery in January and could miss time at the beginning of the season while he recovers. Though he has not been completely ruled out for opening day, there is enough uncertainty around Crawford's health and performance that he could easily slide into the middle rounds on draft day.
