Padres prospect Robbie Erlin coming on strong at Triple-A
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(4/27/15) After a slow start, Padres pitching prospect Robbie Erlin is coming around at Triple-A El Paso.
The 24-year-old Erlin (3-1) owns a 4.50 ERA that has been shrinking. He managed his second straight strong start Sunday in a defeat of Salt Lake, yielding one run on seven hits and striking out three in six innings.
Erlin has allowed just two earned runs in 12 innings over his last two starts, but has surrendered 28 hits in 22 innings on the year.

|(3/22/15) The Padres optioned pitchers Robbie Erlin and Leonel Campos to Triple-A El Paso and re-assigned shortstop Diego Goris and pitchers Matt Wisler and Jay Jackson to minor-league camp Sunday.
Erlin has started 20 games for the major-league team over the last two seasons. He finishes his spring with two earned runs allowed in six innings. Wisler, who is considered one of the team's top pitching prospects, allowed eight earned runs in five innings over three appearances.
Black: Morrow, Despaigne might have slight edge for No. 5 SP role
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(2/26/15) While Padres manager Bud Black is not ready to put odds on the competition for the final spot in the team's rotation, he did seem to indicate Brandon Morrow and Odrisamer Despaigne might be a little ahead of Robbie Erlin and Matt Wisler , per U-T San Diego.
"I think we're going to look at them all, but Morrow and Despaigne have a little something to them," Black said. "It doesn't hurt Matt to go back to the minors. Robbie Erlin was in our rotation last year, made some starts and pitched well at times. He's still developing. I don't know if there's a front-runner, but you can maybe say that Morrow and Despaigne are out there just a touch."
Robbie Erlin gives up two runs in no-decision vs. Rockies
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(9/24/14) Padres pitcher Robbie Erlin didn't factor into the decision Tuesday, giving up two earned runs on six hits and two walks in four innings while striking out two in his team's 3-2 defeat against the Rockies.
Erlin surrendered RBI singles in the third and fourth innings and didn't come out for the fifth after tossing 83 pitches in the first four frames. He owns a 4.53 ERA and 45:13 K:BB ratio in 59 2/3 innings. He's scheduled to close out the season against the Giants Sunday.
Robbie Erlin to fill in for Tyson Ross again
|by Al Melchior | Data Analyst|
|(9/21/14) The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Padres lefty Robbie Erlin will start in place of the injured Tyson Ross for Tuesday's game against the Rockies. He did the same on Thursday, as Ross missed his turn due to discomfort in his lower forearm.
It is not yet known if Ross will make another start before the end of the season.
|2014 summary: Robbie Erlin spent more than half of his second season in the majors on the disabled list with an elbow injury, and his results when healthy were mixed. In seven appearances (including six starts) at PETCO Park, Erlin was was superb with a 2.86 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a 7.5 K/9 ratio. In his six road appearances (including five starts), the lefty was torched for a 7.76 ERA and 1.80 WHIP with a mere 5.7 strikeouts per nine innings. |
Playing time status: Erlin should be in contention for a spot at the back end of the Padres' rotation.
2015 outlook: As long as Erlin is a Padre, he will be the ideal daily league pitcher for home starts. Opposing teams will likely pit righty-heavy lineups against him, and PETCO Park does a great job of sapping the power of righty hitters. However, Erlin isn't enough of a strikeout or ground ball pitcher to thrive in most other environments, even though he is a solid strike-thrower. On Draft Day, he only merits consideration in NL-only leagues, but mixed league owners should monitor his schedule closely and be ready to take advantage of his home starts.
