Astros' Altuve hasn't been able to get the better of Angels' Weaver
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(4/16/15) Astros second baseman Jose Altuve has had plenty of success offensively in his MLB career, as evidence by his 2014 AL batting crown and his career .302 batting average.
However, one pitcher Altuve hasn't been able to solve has been Angels starting pitcher Jered Weaver, who will be on the mound Friday to open a three-game series against Houston.
Altuve is batting .188 (3 for 16) in his career against Weaver. All three of his hits are singles and he has no RBI or walks. He also has three strikeouts.
Altuve is carrying a six-game hitting streak into Friday's matchup. He is batting .357 (10 for 28) with one double, one home run and three RBI in that span.

Astros 2B Jose Altuve goes one for four in 2-0 win

|(4/6/15) Astros second baseman Jose Altuve singled once in four at-bats during the team's 2-0 victory over the Indians on Opening day.
"I wanted to put the ball in play," Altuve said. "As soon as I got on first base, I knew Springer was hitting behind me, and if I got to second base, he can drive me in. That's what happened, and we took the lead, and that's pretty important in the inning."
Altuve was last year's batting champion finishing with a league-high batting average of .341, adding seven home runs and 59 RBI on 225 hits.
Astros' Jose Altuve working to perfect running game this spring

|(3/22/15) Astros second baseman Jose Altuve was one of the most deadly base stealers in baseball last season. This year, manager A.J. Hinch wants to ensure Altuve is being smart on the base paths, not just when he's stealing a base, reports MLB.com.
"Like anything, it's all built on trust," Hinch said. "You want your players to play with freedom, and if they feel like they need to take an extra base they can take an extra base. They have the freedom to play. By no means do I want to put a ton of restrictions on them, but you want to make sure they know the situation."
Baserunning instructor Gary Pettis, who stole 354 bases in his career, is working to help Altuve make smart decisions on the base paths.
"You don't want to run just to steal bases," he said. "A stolen base gets you in scoring position. Now if you rack up numbers doing that, great. You're helping the team and you help yourself also because of the numbers, but you're stealing to get into scoring position. That's what we're doing."
|2014 summary: Given that Jose Altuve was typically a mid-round pick last season, it's an understatement to say that owners got a great deal of value from the Astros' second baseman. Altuve upped his speed game in leading the American League with 56 stolen bases and 39 infield hits. The latter helped Altuve hit a major league-leading .341, which catapulted him to the top of the second base rankings in Fantasy value. It wasn't just speed that made Altuve so valuable, as he shrank his strikeout per at-bat ratio from 14 to eight percent and shattered his personal best for doubles with 47.|
Playing time status: Altuve has been durable and is a key part of the Astros' offense to boot, so expect him to play close to the full schedule.
2015 outlook: Though Altuve's batting average is due to dip somewhat, he could still eclipse .300 again and could approximate last season's stolen base, run and RBI pace. Even without double-digit home run power, Altuve is now firmly ensconced among the second base elite, and is worth drafting within the first two rounds.
