Padres' Cory Spangenberg earns Sunday start vs. Rockies

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(2:00 pm ET) Padres utility man Cory Spangenberg will start for the Padres in Sunday's game against the Rockies. He'll bat second and play second base.

This is Spangenberg's first start since an April 24 game against the Dodgers.

Third baseman Yangervis Solarte is back in the lineup and will hit fifth. After taking Saturday off, shortstop Alexi Amarista is back in the lineup and will bat eighth.

Padres' Yangervis Solarte back in the starting lineup Saturday

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(4/25/15) Padres second baseman Yangervis Solarte is back in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Dodgers, according to TrueBlueLA.com.

It will be Solarte's first start at second in the last three games after getting the day off Friday in favor of  Cory Spangenberg. Solarte is hitting .308 with two home runs and nine RBI in 39 at-bats this season. He is 2 for 3 with two doubles in his career against Dodgers' starter Brandon McCarthy.

The Padres are currently the underdogs (+105) against Los Angeles.

Jedd Gyorko, who opened the season hitting .163, is out of the lineup for the third straight game.

The Padres are +107 money line underdogs at home against the Dodgers.

Padres' Cory Spangenberg productive in bench role

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/23/15) Padres infielder Cory Spangenberg delivered key doubles in back-to-back games as a pinch hitter Tuesday and Wednesday, and he drew the start at second base and hit second in Thursday's series finale in Colorado.

"We think a lot of Spangy with the bat," manager Bud Black said before Thursday's game, per MLB.com. "He's hit wherever he's been, so that doesn't surprise us when he gets his hits, even though his average is down."

Spangenberg knocked a ground-rule double to lead off the seventh inning Tuesday, eventually coming around to score a key run. He then drove in the go-ahead run with a double Wednesday, but the Padres were unable to hang on for the win.

"He threw a backdoor cutter, sort of gave up on it. It was a good pitch," Spangenberg said of Wednesday's go-ahead at-bat. "And then he went to a two-seamer changeup, and I didn't try to do too much with it. I just took what he gave me."

The two doubles have Spangenberg's line up to .250/.250/.417 in 12 at-bats.

"We think eventually he's going to be a guy in the major leagues who's going to be an offensive producer with average and maybe some stolen bases," Black said. "There's some extra-base hits in there too. We like Cory, and we think there's a bat in there. There's some hits in there. "

Padres' Cory Spangenberg 'in the mix' for bench role

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(2/25/15) Padres manager Bud Black said Wednesday that infielder Cory Spangenberg is "in the mix" for a bench role this season, U-T San Diego reports.

"Absolutely he's in the mix," Black said. "He has versatility, speed, bat. A National League bench player requires certain intangibles and a certain mindset to be able to handle that. He's been an everyday player in the minor leagues, but if you ask a lot of players, 'Would you rather be in Triple-A or a bench player, part-time starter in the big leagues,' what are they going to say? It's not a question."

Spangenberg indicated he's willing to fill any role with the team if he can make the club. "Any role to make the club -- that's what I'm here for," he said. "So anything I can do to help myself out, I'm going to try to do."

If he can make the 25-man roster this spring, Spangenberg will likely serve as a reserve at second base and third base, the two positions that Black believes represent the best fit for the infielder. Spangenberg made his major-league debut in 2014 and hit .290/.313/.452 with two home runs, nine RBI and four stolen bases in 62 at-bats with the Padres.
