Preseason Outlook

DeRosa, who spent most of his career as a utility infielder, validated his breakout 2008 by hitting a career-high 23 homers. He slowed down after a midseason trade sent him from Cleveland to St. Louis, hitting .233 with three home runs over the final two months, though his attempt to play with a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist might have had something to do with it. With everyday at-bats as the Giants' starting third baseman, DeRosa could offer worthwhile numbers in every category except stolen bases, but keep in mind this recent upswing in his career might not last long. He's already 35. Given his age, slow finish and uncertain role, he's more of a late-round reserve in mixed leagues than someone you'll want to trust as a starter. He could end up outperforming his draft position, though, if everything goes right. (Updated 1/3/10)
