Guillen opts for retirement: After 14 seasons in the major leagues, Seattle second baseman Carlos Guillen announced his retirement on Tuesday, according to the team. Guillen, a three-time All-Star, made his big-league debut with the Mariners in 1998. He spent parts of six seasons with Seattle before joining Detroit in 2004 and hitting at least .318 in three straight seasons. He carried a .285 batting average for his career with 124 homers and 660 RBI. "Its hard because you only make this decision one time in your career and in your life," Guillen told MLB.com. Fantasy Analysis
Guillen was hoping to land a bench spot with the Mariners this spring after signing a minor-league deal with the team during the offseason. But the 36-year-old missed several workouts because of a calf injury -- a common theme for Guillen, who was limited to just 28 games last year in his final season with the Tigers. Fantasy owners should continue to ignore the former standout in all drafts for the upcoming campaign. (Updated 03/06/2012).
11/01/2011 16:35 Tigers GM: Ordonez, Guillen not likely to return
Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski says it is highly unlikely free agents Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen will be back next season.
Carlos Guillen has struggled to stay healthy in recent years, and it cost him an opportunity to prolong his career. Guillen, who has played fewer than 85 games in each of his past three seasons (all with Detroit) opted for retirement in early March. The three-time All-Star, now 36 years old, signed a minor league deal with Seattle in the offseason and hoped to land a bench spot for the upcoming season with a strong spring. He posted a .285 batting average with 124 homers and 660 RBI during his 14-year career. Fantasy owners should continue to pass on him during 2012 drafts. (Updated 3/6/12)
