Preseason Outlook

Every year, Pierzynski ends up as someone's starting catcher in Fantasy, and every year, he puts up more or less the same numbers. He's a safe bet for a .280-.300 batting average and 12-15 home runs, which makes him plenty usable at a position with a staggering lack of depth. Yet he never ranks among the top options at the position or anywhere close to them, nor should he. His batting average and home runs might come close to theirs, but because of where he bats in the lineup, his RBI and runs scored don't even compare. If you end up with him in the late rounds, he won't hurt you, but you shouldn't necessarily target him. Keep in mind that as he enters his mid-30s, the White Sox might begin spelling him more for prospect Tyler Flowers. (Updated 1/6/10)
