Preseason Outlook

Lowell's return from a torn labrum didn't go as well as Chase Utley's or Alex Rodriguez's. He spent time on the DL with soreness in his hip, and the soreness never went away when he returned after the All-Star break. He hit well enough even with the soreness, batting .302 with an .841 OPS in the second half, but the injury -- not to mention a midseason trade for Victor Martinez -- reduced him to a semi-regular role. At age 36, his days as an everyday third baseman have likely ended, meaning you can forget 90-plus RBI, but he'll still get enough playing time in a reduced role, bouncing Kevin Youkilis between first and third base, to hit as many as 15 home runs with a respectable batting average. Those numbers would give him some appeal as a corner infielder in Fantasy, but he's no more than a late-rounder on Draft Day and might even go undrafted in some leagues. (Updated 12/18/09)
