Preseason Outlook

Beltran was off to one of the best starts of his career in 2009. Then, his body interfered. A bone bruise on his right knee sidelined him for a couple weeks, then a couple months, then eventually half the season. He did return in September and swung the bat well enough, hitting .284 with two home runs in 67 at-bats, but the pain came back in the offseason, forcing him to have arthroscopic surgery in January. The procedure and subsequent recovery will sideline him at least until mid-April and opens the door to further doubt on Draft Day. Even if he bounces back from this injury as early and completely as expected, you have to wonder about his ability to stay healthy as he enters his mid-30s. Only once in the last four seasons has he reached the 150-game mark. He still hits for power, gets on base and drives in plenty of runs in the heart of the Mets lineup, giving him the potential to perform like one of the top two or three outfielders in Fantasy, but his risk factors place him barely inside the top 25. That said, if you see him still on the board in the middle rounds, you'll want to take advantage of the value. (Updated 1/14/10)
