| Royals prospect might need Lasik eye surgery |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/16/13) Royals outfield prospect Bubba Starling left Class A Lexington Wednesday to travel to Kansas City, where he might undergo Lasik eye surgery, according to The Kansas City Star. Starling recently complained of having problems seeing the ball at night.
"When a player makes mention of it, we’re going to get it checked again," assistant general manager of player development J.J. Picollo said. "Upon his examination, there was a discrepancy from his last eye examination, which was in 2012, to this year’s most recent one. He’s going to see our doctor here, and he is a potential candidate for Lasik surgery. If that’s the case, we’re just going to go ahead and get it taken care of right away. The turnaround time for Lasik is so quick that he can potentially be back in the lineup maybe as early as this weekend. However, we’re not counting on it, nor do we think it’s necessary."
Starling is batting .213 with four home runs, six doubles and 17 RBI in 35 games. He's batting .300 in day games but .172 at night.

| Bubba Starling turning it around in Class A |

| Starling living up to the billing |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (8/5/12) Royals prospect Bubba Starling homered for the second straight game and third time in five contests Saturday for Rookie League Burlington. Starling, who was drafted fifth overall in 2011, is batting .288 with a .391 on-base percentage, .542 slugging percentage and .934 OPS in 29 games. He also has two triples, five doubles, seven homers, 22 RBI, 24 runs and five stolen bases.

| Because he played three sports (rather than focusing just on baseball) in high school, Bubba Starling is a bit of a project for the Royals, but his tools are off the charts, as you might expect for the player drafted fifth overall in 2011. The Royals didn't turn him loose at the beginning of 2012, but when he did get his shot in Rookie ball later in the year, his power and speed were both on full display. Surprisingly, he drew a high number of walks as well, producing a .371 on-base percentage to go along with his .275 batting average, but he hasn't figured out how to make consistent contact, striking out 70 times in 200 at-bats. If and when he corrects that aspect of his game, he'll be arguably the top prospect in baseball. But we're probably years from seeing that happen. If you play in a long-term keeper league, you can't let Starling go unowned, but he's irrelevant in single-season formats. (Updated 1/4/13) |
