Knuckle curveball a key pitch for D-Backs prospect Archie Bradley

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/24/15) Diamondbacks starting pitcher prospect Archie Bradley is hoping his knuckle curveball will be a pitch that carries him onto the major-league roster in 2015, per MLB.com.

"For a knuckle curve, you're not throwing it like a normal curveball where you're snapping your arm," Bradley said. "I was able to throw it at a young age, and it's just something that has been successful for me in pro ball.

"It's a pretty unique pitch. When I'm throwing it well, it has some pretty hard 12-to-six break. Sometimes I'll get on the side with it and make it go a little sideways, but for the most part, I just try to keep it the same and just keep going."

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale has been impressed with Bradley a few days into camp. Bradley is considered a top 100 prospect by Baseball America (No. 25) and MLB.com (No. 15).

"The workouts and everything that he has done so far have been fantastic," Hale said. "He's been very professional about his work and his bullpens are getting better and better."

Diamondbacks' Archie Bradley looking to bounce back in 2015

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(2/21/15) Diamondbacks pitcher Archie Bradley didn't have an ideal rookie camp in Arizona. But he's not letting that change how he feels heading into spring training this year.

Maybe I would have toned it down a little bit as far as not letting all the media and all the, I guess, hype or expectations ride on me," Bradley said. "I put pressure on myself anyway, and my goal was to make the team last year. It's the same this year, but I was so caught up on every pitch and every outing. You just can't pitch like that. You don't succeed when your mind-frame is like that and you put that much pressure on yourself."

Bradley went 3-7 in stints with three different minor-league clubs in 2014, posting a 4.45 ERA with 75 strikeouts in 83 innings pitched.

"For me, I would definitely say after the bad year I had last year, I'm coming in this year with a chip on my shoulder with something to prove," he said. "Last year was just a bad year for me. I'm looking for a bounce-back year."

Diamondbacks GM would like Archie Bradley to start 2015 in minors

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/10/14) It appears when Diamondbacks starting pitcher prospect Archie Bradley shows up for spring training in 2015, he will face an uphill battle to make the roster.

"If I had my way, I would probably have him start the season back in the minor leagues and get more seasoning," general manager Dave Stewart told MLB Network Radio Sunday.

Bradley entered the 2014 season as a highly touted pitching prospect, who was on the verge of making his MLB debut. However, he spent the entire season in the minors, as he struggled with injury and inconsistency. He went 3-7 with a 4.45 ERA and 1.51 WHIP over three levels in the minors.

Archie Bradley might not make major league debut this season

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/27/14) Diamondbacks stud pitching prospect Archie Bradley might not see a major league mound in 2014. Those hoping he'd be called up in September could wind up being disappointed, per the Arizona Republic.

Bradley will pitch in the Arizona Fall League, which might preclude him from working with the Diamondbacks down the stretch. Kirk Gibson said the decision will be up to general manager Kevin Towers.

The right-hander needs the work. An elbow injury has limited him to just 82 2/3 innings this season, just over half the number he racked up in 2013.

Archie Bradley still a candidate to make MLB debut in 2014

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/20/14) Diamondbacks starting pitcher Archie Bradley, who has missed most of the season due to an elbow injury, had one of his best starts of the season Saturday for Double-A Mobile. He struck out 10 batters in seven innings.

Despite the strong outing, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson remained noncommittal about Bradley's chances of making his MLB debut this season, per MLB.com.

"It's possible," Gibson said. "He's got to continue to throw the ball better and better and see what kind of opportunities are made available. You never know.

"He really hasn't thrown that many starts, and he's working on some things down there and he has to be more consistent at it. … When he does that, if there's a need up there, I'm sure he'll get consideration."
