by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (4/29/13) Cubs prospect Javier Baez was named the Florida State League Player of the Week on Monday. He batted .435 with two homers, six RBI and five runs scored last week for Class A Daytona.
Baez is batting .263 for the year with five home runs, 15 RBI and a .526 slugging percentage.

| Javier Baez powering up at Class A |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (4/18/13) After a slow start to the season, Cubs shortstop prospect Javier Baez is heating up for Class A Daytona. Baez homered for the second straight game Wednesday, sending his season total to three homers in 13 games.
Baez has hit safely in five of his last six games, batting .285 (8 for 28). He's lifted his season average to .207. Although Baez doesn't have a great average, he's slugging .483 on the season thanks to eight extra-base hits.
Baez is ranked by MLB.com as the Cubs' top prospect and No. 16 overall prospect.

| Cubs place Javier Baez at Class A Daytona |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (4/2/13) The Cubs announced Tuesday shortstop prospect Javier Baez will start the 2013 season at Class A Daytona, according to MLB.com.
Baez, who is considered the team's top prospect by Baseball America and MLB.com, hit .298 with two doubles, four homers and 10 RBI in 17 spring games. He has a minor-league slash line of .293/.342/.534/.876 in 85 career games. The 2011 first-round pick (ninth overall) also has 16 homers, 47 RBI and 26 stolen bases.

| Cubs shed four players from roster |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (3/18/13) The Chicago Cubs further trimmed their roster Monday by optioning third baseman Josh Vitters to Triple-A Iowa, and reassigning pitcher Barret Loux, shortstop Javier Baez and catcher Rafael Lopez to the team's minor-league camp. Baez is considered the team's top prospect by MLB.com and finished with a .333 batting average, four homers and nine RBI in 15 games this spring.

| Javier Baez displaying his power |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (3/16/13) After slugging two home runs the night before, Cubs prospect Javier Baez had another powerful day at the plate in Saturday's Cactus League game against the Royals. He went 2 for 3 with two solo homers in the 8-3 win. Baez launched a shot off starter Bruce Chen in his first at-bat before victimizing the left-hander again in the fifth inning.
Baez has gone 11 for 34 (.324) with four homers and eight RBI through 14 spring games. He is expected to begin the year in the minors, most likely Class A Daytona.
"He's special, obviously that's why he was drafted where he was," bench coach Jamie Quirk told MLB.com of the former first-round pick. "Hopefully, he just keeps doing what he's doing and his talents will take him as quickly as he needs to be. He's getting great experience by getting a chance to play all these games in a major league spring training."

| The term most often used when assessing Javier Baez's talents is bat speed. Judging by the comparisons to Gary Sheffield and Hanley Ramirez, he has plenty to spare. Bat speed, as you know, generates power, and power, as you know, is rare among shortstops. Of course, speculating about Baez's power is one thing. Actually witnessing it -- as we did when he finally got an opportunity to play midway through 2012, hitting 16 home runs (to go along with 24 stolen bases) in only 293 at-bats -- is quite another. Now that we know his power is more than hypothetical, he's deserving of all the hype we can heap on him. While you might assume, as with most prospects with genuine middle-of-the-order power, Baez is destined to outgrow the shortstop position, his defense may have been what impressed the Cubs the most during his first full professional season, with their head of scouting and player development saying he looked like a veteran out there. Baez's struggles after reaching high Class A last year suggest he may still need a couple years of seasoning, but he's advanced enough for a player his age that the Cubs could call on him whenever they feel he's ready. A starting job in 2014 is entirely possible. (Updated 1/4/13) |
