| Taylor Guerrieri pitching like top prospect |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/13/13) Rays starting pitcher prospect Taylor Guerrieri struck out a career-high 10 batters in five scoreless innings during a win Sunday for Class A Bowling Green. The right-hander (2-1) allowed one hit and two walks.
"I had good changeup command. Really, everything was working pretty well," Guerrieri said, per MLB.com. "The only thing I didn't like was those two walks. I didn't feel very good about that. I just got behind. I fell behind 3-0 to both of those guys. All the guys [whom] I got ahead on, I got out. The name of the game is getting ahead, I guess."
Guerrieri sports a 2.00 ERA and .216 opponents' batting average through six starts. He also has 25 strikeouts to six walks in 27 innings. Guerrieri hasn't logged a lot of innings because the Rays continue to keep the 2011 first-round pick on a strict pitch count.
"I'm still on the five innings/75 pitches rule -- whichever comes first," said Guerrieri, who is considered the Rays' second-best prospect by MLB.com. "I'm OK with it. I was in spring training for an extra week, so some of our guys get to do a little more. They're up to six innings/85 pitches. I ended up at 79 pitches after five today. If I could throw out those first two innings and replace them with good innings, I bet I would have gotten to pitch six. Those first two innings took 40 pitches. If you took those away, I would have been able to go a little bit deeper."

| Guerrieri showing improved command |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (8/16/12) Rays starting pitcher prospect Taylor Guerrieri has experienced early success since his season began in late June at short-season Class A Hudson Valley. The 2011 first-round pick (24th overall) recorded his first pro win in his last outing Aug. 8 by tossing five scoreless innings. Guerrieri is 1-2 with a 1.06 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in eight starts. He also has 29 strikeouts to two walks in 34 innings.

| Because he's only 20 and has yet to pitch a full season of professional baseball, now might be a little too soon to get excited about Taylor Guerrieri in Fantasy. But his performance at the short-season level was so impressive that he's worth hyping for the long haul. With a high-90s fastball and a sharp curveball, he clearly has the arsenal to be a top-of-the-rotation starter, and seeing as he surrendered only five walks in 52 innings, control doesn't look like it'll be an issue for him. Given their approach to Matt Moore, who spent nearly five full seasons in the minors before getting the call in 2011, the Rays, who never seem to have a shortage of starting pitching, will surely take their time with Guerrieri, but if early returns are any indication, he'll be well worth the wait. If you don't pounce on him now in a dynasty league, you might not get another opportunity. (Updated 1/10/13) |
