Nationals demote SP Joe Ross after encouraging run

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/23/15) The Nationals have optioned pitcher Joe Ross to Triple-A Syracuse to make room for Stephen Strasburg, who has been activated off the disabled list.

The 22-year-old Ross certainly opened some eyes in his short stint with Washington. He allowed just six runs in 20 1/3 innings over three starts, walking two and fanned 23 along the way.

Return of Strasburg knocks Nationals SP Joe Ross out of rotation

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/20/15) It appears that Nationals impressive right-hander Joe Ross will not get another start as Stephen Strasburg is set to make his next one at the major league level. Matt Williams has nixed the notion of a six-man rotation.

Ross, however, has certainly made an impression. "He's opened eyes ... seriously opened eyes," Williams told MASNSports.com.

The 22 year old allowed only six runs on 19 hits with 23 strikeouts in 21 innings over three outings. He walked just two along the way.

Nationals SP Joe Ross stymies Pirates' offense on Friday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(6/19/15) Nationals rookie pitcher Joe Ross turned in a terrific outing on Friday against the Pirates. Ross pitched into the eighth inning, allowing one run on six hits over 7 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out a career-high 11 batters.

Ross (2-1) was making his third career start, and the 11 strikeouts were one shy of the total from his first two starts combined. The only run he gave up came in the second inning on an RBI single by Gregory Polanco.

The impressive outing lowered Ross' ERA to 2.66.

"I think that he's aggressive," Nationals manager Matt Williams said, per MLB.com. "He throws strikes down in the zone, which leads to a lot of swings on the slider down out of the zone, but it starts with the fastball."

With Stephen Strasburg still on the DL, Ross will likely get at least one more start, which would be scheduled for Thursday at home against the Braves.

Nationals P Joe Ross to start Friday

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(6/18/15) The Nationals will start pitcher Joe Ross on the mound for Friday's game against the Pirates, according to The Washington Post's Chelsea Janes.

Max Scherzer was originally slated to start Friday but each member in the rotation is getting pushed back a day. Scherzer will now start Saturday and Gio Gonzalez on Sunday.

Ross was impressive in his last start in which he only gave up two runs in a 7-2 victory over the Brewers.

Nationals SP Joe Ross picks up first MLB win in dominant effort

by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(6/13/15) Nationals pitcher Joe Ross, who was making just the second start of his young career, was in control from the outset Saturday, helping the Nationals take a 7-2 victory over the Brewers.

Ross went eight innings and scattered seven hits while allowing just two runs. He struck out eight batters and walked just one to pick up his first big-league victory. Ross was a hard-luck loser in his MLB debut after allowing six hits and three runs in five innings of work last Saturday.

"I didn't walk anyone until the second-to-last batter. That helped with pitch count," Ross said, per MLB.com. "We were a little short [in the bullpen], so it was huge for us."

Ross threw 108 pitches and tossed first-pitch strikes to 23 of the 32 batters he faced.

"We needed that one," manager Matt Williams said. "He was aggressive in the strike zone, getting ahead of guys. He was throwing where he wants to, that's the most important thing."
