Rays option Curt Casali, C.J. Riefenhauser to Triple-A

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/5/15) The Rays have optioned catcher Curt Casali and pitcher C.J. Riefenhauser to Triple-A Durham.

Casali was unable to beat out Bobby Wilson for the team's backup-catcher role, while Riefenhauser failed to win a spot in the bullpen. The Rays have also reassigned infielder Jake Elmore and third baseman Juan Francisco to Durham.

Rays C Curt Casali loses backup catcher spot to Bobby Wilson

by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com
(4/3/15) Rays rookie catcher Curt Casali lost the backup catcher spot to Bobby Wilson, according to tbo.com.

Rays manager Kevin Cash stated that it was a tough call between Wilson and Casali.

“There was a lot that went to it,” Cash said. “Rarely do you go through a season without the use of three catchers. We’re going to need Curt at some point. We’re lucky to have him. We view him as a big league catcher. With the way things out this spring, he did everything he could to make this team, but where we are today, moving forward, what we can do best for the organization right now is to have Bobby with us and have some coverage in Curt.”

Wilson signed a minor league contract with the Rays this offseason.

“It was definitely a tough decision for them because they are sticking their neck out for me and they’re putting their eggs in their basket for me and saying we appreciate what Bobby does behind the plate and values the defensive side and what I can do,” Wilson said. “I know it was a difficult decision for them, but I’m glad in their evaluation they wanted a veteran guy, somebody that has been in that role before.”

Casali batted .207 with six hits, one home run and 12 strikeouts in 33 plate appearances this spring.

Kirby Yates, Tim Beckham to break camp with Rays

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/3/15) Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters that catcher Bobby Wilson, infielder Tim Beckham and right-hander Kirby Yates all made the big-league roster, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Beckham beat out Jake Elmore for a spot on the team's bench as a sixth infielder. He hit .245 with two doubles, one triple and three RBI over 53 at-bats this spring. Wilson beat out Curt Casali for the job. He hit .120 with three hits and five strikeouts this spring. Meanwhile, Yates allowed only three earned runs over 11 innings of work in Grapefruit League play.

Curt Casali, Bobby Wilson still battling for Rays' backup catcher job

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/29/15) In the final week of spring training, Rays manager Kevin Cash still isn't sure who his backup catcher will be.

Curt Casali and Bobby Wilson are the two candidates for the job.

"I think both guys have had good camps," Cash said, per MLB.com. "They've shown what they need to show. And we've kind of anticipated that that would happen. So there are going to be some discussions and decisions that have to be made.

Casali is hitting .208 this spring.

"I know he's been continuing to work," Cash said, although he'd like to see him "drive the ball a little more."

Wilson is hitting .143.

"We knew Bobby," Cash said. "A little more of a track record, history at the Major League level. I think that helps."

Rays remain undecided on No. 2 catcher

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/28/15) Rays manager Kevin Cash said the race for the backup catcher job between Curt Casali or Bobby Wilson has "been made difficult simply because the guys have performed well," according to the Tampa Bay Times on Saturday.

Casali has a .190 batting average with a .217 on-base percentage in 10 Grapefruit League games. Wilson owns a .143/.250/.143 slash line through 12 games this spring.
