|Chad Bettis likely to remain in bullpen for 2014 |
|by Al Melchior | Data Analyst|
(10/6/13) The Denver Post reports that Chad Bettis, who made eight starts for the Rockies as a rookie this year, will be counted on as a member of the team's relief corps next season. Rockies owner Dick Monfort indicated this in a letter to season-ticket holders last week.
Bettis worked most of September out of the bullpen, and in seven relief innings, he allowed seven earned runs.

(9/11/13) The Rockies have sent pitcher Chad Bettis to the bullpen for the remainder of the season in order to evaluate Roy Oswalt, MLB.com reports. Bettis has previous experience both starting and working in relief but has said he prefers to start.
"I think you have to make the determination whether a guy is maybe more of a sprinter versus a guy who can go through a lineup three times in a row," manager Walt Weiss told MLB.com. "Some of that comes down to mechanics, some of it comes down to mentality and some of it comes down to stuff. You put that all together and you make that determination. But with some guys it's not that easy and it's a tough call. You can make a case, certainly in Chad's case, you can make a case either way."
Bettis, who pitched a scoreless inning Wednesday, is 0-3 with a 4.89 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 24:18 K:BB ratio in 38 2/3 innings.

(9/8/13) Rockies starting pitcher Chad Bettis pitched better this time around Sunday against the Padres, but was pulled after just three innings of work.
Bettis opened the game with three scoreless innings, while allowing just two hits. He struck out four batters, while throwing 31 of 48 pitches for strikes.
Bettis' early exit appears to have come so the Rockies could get Roy Oswalt extra work, as Oswalt ended up pitching longer than Bettis. There does not appear to be any physical issues with Bettis. The Rockies would go on to lose, 5-2.
Bettis carries an 0-3 record and 5.02 ERA into his next start, scheduled for Saturday against the Diamondbacks.

Bettis allowed five earned runs on eight hits and four walks over just 4 2/3 innings in the no-decision. He struck out four over 105 pitches before Jeff Manship suffered the loss. Bettis' ERA is now at 5.45.
The 24-year-old starter has made seven career starts for the Rockies. He's allowed nine runs in his last two spanning 10 2/3 innings. Bettis is 0-3 thus far in his career, though he's had some decent outings. His next scheduled start comes Sunday at San Diego.
