Rothschild: Yankees pondering using a sixth starter in April and May
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(2/18/15) Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Wednesday the team is considering using a sixth starter at times in April and May to help reduce a potential early strain on their rotation, per MLB.com. The Yankees have a stretch of 30 games in 31 days beginning April 17.
"It's a result of some of the stuff that's gone on over the last few years, not just here, but everywhere," Rothschild said. "We're aware of situations here and early in the season, we need to get these guys through these stretches. Being that possibly early in the spring, some of them aren't going to be able to throw a lot, we're going to need to build them up too and give them the extra days when we can."
CC Sabathia, Masahiro Tanaka, Michael Pineda, Nathan Eovaldi and Chris Capuano are expected to make up the team's five-man rotation. However, Tanaka, Sabathia and Pineda were all injured last season, as the Yankees used 13 starting pitchers.
Bryan Mitchell, Esmil Rogers, Adam Warren and Chase Whitley are some of the other pitchers that will be stretched out this spring.
"It'd be nice to go through a season with five starters, but there's a good chance we're not going to," Rothschild said. "There's a good chance every team in baseball won't, so it doesn't hurt to see who might fit in as a sixth starter."

The team announced the addition of catcher John Ryan Murphy and pitchers Preston Claiborn, Bryan Mitchell and Chase Whitley to the active roster.
Following bullpen struggles, Chase Whitley sent down
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
|(8/21/14) The Yankees optioned pitcher Chase Whitley to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Thursday, to clear a roster spot for a callup.
Whitley has spent the last month pitching out of the Yankees bullpen, but has struggled in that role. He has allowed 10 runs over his last 7 1/3 innings, raising his season ERA to 5.43 overall.
Chase Whitley heading back to bullpen

|(7/25/14) The addition of veteran Chris Capuano to the rotation for the Yankees has kicked Chase Whitley out of it and sent him to the bullpen.
Whitley is coming off his strongest start, a six-inning shutout performance against Texas on Tuesday. But that came in the wake of several duds, so apparently the die was cast. He is 4-3 with a 4.60 ERA on the year.
Chase Whitley tosses six scoreless innings vs. Rangers
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(7/23/14) Yankees pitcher Chase Whitley didn't factor into Tuesday's decision after giving up seven hits in six scoreless innings, striking out six and walking none in his team's 2-1, 14-inning win over the Rangers.
Whitley was removed after giving up a leadoff single in the seventh inning despite having thrown just 75 pitches. However, it was the first time he has completed six innings since June 12. Whitley owns a 4.60 ERA and 46:12 K:BB ratio in 60 2/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Blue Jays Sunday.
2015 Fantasy Outlooks: New York Yankees
The Yankees return with another veteran-heavy lineup, and Al Melchior says this roster is much deeper in question marks than Fantasy impact players.
