Cashman: Adam Warren the favorite to win final spot in rotation

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/25/15) Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday pitcher Adam Warren is the favorite to win the final spot in the team's rotation, per MLB.com. Cashman indicated Warren has a huge lead in the race over the remaining candidates -- Esmil Rogers, Bryan Mitchell, Chase Whitley and Scott Baker.

"There is a Secretariat in the field," Cashman said, per the New York Post. "Right now, Warren’s got a big lead in this, but we don’t have to make that decision right now. As of right now, if we made the call today, it would be Warren."

Warren is 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA through four spring starts. He has allowed four runs on 13 hits and no walks in 13 innings, while striking out six.

Yankees' Girardi: Fifth-starter competition 'is on'

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/18/15) Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Wednesday that the competition for the fifth starting spot in the rotation begins in earnest with this trip through the rotation, MLB.com reports.

"The competition is on now, in a sense," Girardi said. "These guys are competing for jobs. Even though they probably felt they already were before, this is when we're really going to start paying attention to it."

Esmil Rogers is scheduled to take the mound Thursday against the Phillies, while Adam Warren is slated to make his case Friday against the Tigers. Girardi added that he expects Bryan Mitchell to get at least one more start but was less commital on Chase Whitley or Scott Baker getting another look in the rotation.

Yankees pitcher Chase Whitley impressive again Sunday

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(3/15/15) Yankees pitcher Chase Whitley continued his scoreless spring Sunday, throwing two perfect innings against the Phillies. He's thrown seven shutout innings while surrendering just four hits and three walks.

"Really good changeup. That's his pitch," manager Joe Girardi said to MLB.com. "He got some swings and misses on some other pitches, but it's good to see."

Yankees' Chase Whitley trying to work in curveball this spring

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(3/10/15) Yankees pitcher Chase Whitley is always looking to find an edge on the mound. This year, Whitley is looking to add a new pitch to his repertoire: a curveball, reports The Journal News.

"The slider came a long way last year," Whitley said. "The changeup has always been there. (The curveball is) just something to get a strike early and, who knows, maybe it will develop into something (more)."

Whitley has thrown five scoreless innings so far this spring, but is still trying to prove himself to the coaching staff.

"I'm trying to prove myself every day," he said. "Just go out and perform. Whatever happens, happens."

Rothschild: Yankees pondering using a sixth starter in April and May

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/18/15) Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Wednesday the team is considering using a sixth starter at times in April and May to help reduce a potential early strain on their rotation, per MLB.com. The Yankees have a stretch of 30 games in 31 days beginning April 17.

"It's a result of some of the stuff that's gone on over the last few years, not just here, but everywhere," Rothschild said. "We're aware of situations here and early in the season, we need to get these guys through these stretches. Being that possibly early in the spring, some of them aren't going to be able to throw a lot, we're going to need to build them up too and give them the extra days when we can."

CC Sabathia, Masahiro Tanaka, Michael Pineda, Nathan Eovaldi and Chris Capuano are expected to make up the team's five-man rotation. However, Tanaka, Sabathia and Pineda were all injured last season, as the Yankees used 13 starting pitchers.

Bryan MitchellEsmil RogersAdam Warren and Chase Whitley are some of the other pitchers that will be stretched out this spring.

"It'd be nice to go through a season with five starters, but there's a good chance we're not going to," Rothschild said. "There's a good chance every team in baseball won't, so it doesn't hurt to see who might fit in as a sixth starter."
