| Xander Bogaerts continues to dominate Double-A |
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com (5/3/13) Red Sox shortstop prospect Xander Bogaerts continues to dominate Double-A pitching. He has a seven-game hitting streak dating to April 22.
Bogaerts is hitting .400 (8 for 30) over the stretch with a homer, double and three triples. His overall line is .320/.394/.464 in 97 at-bats. Bogaerts was the eighth-best prospect in baseball entering the season according to Baseball America and will be worth watching as he continues to push through the minors.

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (4/24/13) Red Sox shortstop prospect Xander Bogaerts managed his fifth multi-hit game in his last eight outings Tuesday for Double-A Portland, raising his batting average to .395 (17 for 43) in his last 10 games. Bogaerts has a .311/.378/.405/.783 slash line through 17 games, while adding two triples, three doubles, six RBI and 11 runs.

| Xander Bogaerts starting at Double-A |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (4/2/13) After receiving a look at the middle level toward the end of last season, Red Sox infield prospect Xander Bogaerts will begin the 2013 campaign at Double-A Portland, the Boston Globe reports. Bogaerts is regarded as the top prospect in the Red Sox organization by MLB.com -- even higher than outfielder Jackie Bradley -- and is expected to continue working as a shortstop with Portland.
Just 20 years old, Bogaerts displayed solid raw power with Class A Salem last season with 15 homers and 27 doubles en route to a .505 slugging percentage. He also went deep five times in 23 games following his late promotion to Double-A.

| Xander Bogaerts among Red Sox cuts |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (3/25/13) The Boston Red Sox made a few more cuts on Monday following a Grapefruit League loss to the Orioles. Boston reassigned shortstop and prospect Xander Bogaerts to minor-league camp. Infielders Drew Sutton and Jon Diaz will head to minor-league camp with Bogaerts.
The 20-year-old Bogaerts hit .286 this spring after striking out in his only at-bat on Monday. He showed promise in the field and at the plate but the Red Sox weren't ready to let him go in the majors since he's never played above Double-A. He hit .326 over his final 92 at-bats last year with Double-A Portland after hitting .302 over 384 at-bats at Class A Salem.
He is considered the No. 8 prospect in all of baseball by Baseball America to start the season.

| Boston prospect Xander Bogaerts back from WBC |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (3/19/13) Red Sox top prospect Xander Bogaerts has returned following his appearance with the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic, reports MLB.com on Tuesday. Boston manager John Farrell confirmed that Bogaerts will remain in big-league camp before getting sent down to the minors.
"He'll get some reps at short, and possibly third base," said Farrell. "Make no mistake, he's still in our eyes a shortstop and we'll get him a few more at-bats here before he begins his regular season."
Farrell believes the WBC experience will help Bogaerts this season.
"I think the experience he had with the WBC ... is all positive," Farrell said. "Would we have liked more at-bats? Sure. I think the fact that he played in that environment and on that stage outweighs maybe a few less at-bats he might have otherwise had here. All that being said, we're happy for the experience he went through."

| In terms of offensive potential, Xander Bogaerts isn't necessarily better than fellow shortstop Javier Baez, but considering he ascended to Double-A Portland last year, he's probably closer to being major-league ready. He doesn't have Baez's base-stealing ability and is less likely to remain at shortstop long-term, but having maintained a batting average north of .300 as a teenager at Double-A, which is widely regarded as the truest test of a minor-leaguer's abilities, he's as safe a prospect as you'll find at shortstop. With plus power and a willingness to hit the ball to all fields, Bogaerts will be a hot commodity in Fantasy whenever he arrives, but as things stand now in Boston, he'll have to wait his turn. Short of an injury to Dustin Pedroia or Will Middlebrooks, the road to Boston is full of roadblocks for Bogaerts. The Red Sox signed Stephen Drew in the offseason, who will be the starter, and then Bogaerts would need to contend with existing shortstops Jose Iglesias and Pedro Ciriaco. The specter of injury is just reality for Drew and expectations wouldn't exactly be sky-high for Iglesias and Ciriaco. But if those three falter (not out of the question), the Red Sox would surely be tempted to give Bogaerts a look, particularly if he continues to do what he's done all along. Because of that, he might be worth a stash even in seasonal AL-only leagues. (Updated 1/4/13) |
