Report: Indians OK with Perez as starting catcher with Gomes out
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(4/13/15) The Indians don't plan to seek a starting catcher with Yan Gomes sidelined 6-8 weeks due to an MCL sprain, according to FOX Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal.
The team views Roberto Perez as a capable starter, but the team could look for an upgrade at backup catcher over Brett Hayes.
Indians C Yan Gomes out 6-to-8 weeks with MCL sprain
|by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer|
|(4/12/15) The Indians announced Sunday that after undergoing an MRI, catcher Yan Gomes will miss 6-to-8 weeks with a moderate MCL sprain suffered during a play at the plate during Saturday's game against the Tigers.
Gomes was placed on the 15-day DL earlier Sunday, but the MRI confirmed a more serious injury. He was 3 for 20 with a double and two runs scored on the young campaign, but was considered to be one of the key pieces for the Indians in their contention for a division crown.
Gomes hit .278 with 21 home runs last season.

|(4/12/15) The Indians have placed catcher Yan Gomes on the 15-day disabled list due to a right knee sprain, the team announced Sunday.
Gomes suffered the injury in the ninth inning of Saturday's game against the Tigers during a play at the plate. He is 3 for 20 with a double and two runs scored.
Indians catcher Yan Gomes leaves with right leg injury Saturday
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(4/11/15) Indians catcher Yan Gomes left Saturday's game against the Tigers with a right leg injury after Rajai Davis slid into home plate in the ninth inning.
Gomes was covering the plate on a grounder to first with the bases loaded when Carlos Santana tried to get the force at home. Davis went straight into what appeared to be Gomes' right ankle. He needed assistance to get back to the dugout to be further evaluated. Roberto Perez replaced Gomes behind the plate.
Manager Terry Francona said that Gomes had a right knee sprain, per MLB.com. He's scheduled to get an MRI on Sunday morning.
Indians' Yan Gomes' first hit of spring goes for home run
|by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com|
|(3/5/15) Indians catcher Yan Gomes' first hit of the spring came on a two-run home run during Cleveland's 9-3 Cactus League win over the Reds.
Gomes went yard in the fifth inning off of Reds pitcher Burke Badenhop.
Thursday's showing was a good sign that Gomes is picking up where he left off in 2014, when he recorded a batting average of .278 and hit 21 home runs.
|2014 summary: Yan Gomes unexpectedly forced Carlos Santana off the primary catcher's role in 2013, and he did absolutely nothing to make the Indians reverse that decision in 2014. Gomes hit .278 and blasted 21 home runs, while he was fourth among catchers with 61 runs and fifth with 74 RBI. If Gomes displayed a weakness, it's that he walked only 24 times, which sank him to seventh in the Fantasy points rankings for catchers, as compared to fifth in Rotisserie value.|
Playing time status: Regardless of who the backup catcher was, Gomes didn't miss many starts, and only four catchers caught more innings last season. It should be more of the same this season.
2015 outlook: Gomes has hit for power consistently ever since his days in the Florida State League, but his .284 batting average over two season with the Indians has been a pleasant surprise. It might also be unsustainable, unless he can maintain last season's boost to his line drive rate (from 19 to 28 percent). Still, playing time and power should keep Gomes among the top 10 catchers.
