Indians activate Yan Gomes from disabled list
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(5/24/15) The Indians activated catcher Yan Gomes from the 15-day disabled list on Sunday.
Gomes has been out with a knee injury. He'll make his return behind the plate on Sunday, for the first time since mid-April, batting seventh in the lineup.
To make room on the roster, the Indians designated Brett Hayes for assignment.
Indians' Yan Gomes to return Sunday vs. Reds

|(5/21/15) With his Thursday rehab assignment game finished, Indians catcher Yan Gomes will return to his team for Sunday's game against the Reds.
Gomes went 2 for 4 in his rehab assignment Thursday night.
Gomes sprained his MCL in April and has been on the DL since. Gomes has gone a total of 5 for 13 during his rehab assignment.
"We just want to try and make a good decision," Indians manager Terry Francona said, via the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "Part of this is how important he is to us. I've said it before ... you want your catcher to be indispensable. That's probably the ultimate compliment to him. Then when they're not around, you find out that maybe they are."

|(5/21/15) Indians catcher Yan Gomes went 2 for 4 in Thursday's rehab assignment game with Triple-A Columbus.
Columbus lost to Gwinnett 6-1, with Gomes picking up two singles. Gomes was able to play the entire game. This puts Gomes at 5 for 13 during his rehab assignment.
Gomes was placed on the disabled list with a right MCL sprain.
Indians C Yan Gomes feels good after latest rehab assignment
|(5/21/15) Indians catcher Yan Gomes is feeling positive after going seven innings in a rehab assignment on Wednesday, according to Fox Sports.
"It was really good," said Gomes. "I felt good (back there) even in the seventh inning. It was a pretty positive day. There was no position I was getting myself into that was holding me back."
Gomes went 1 for 2 in three plate appearances, and in his four rehab games has gone 3 for 9 with a run scored.
Gomes is on the disabled list with a sprain in his right MCL.
Indians catcher Yan Gomes (knee) nearing return

|(5/19/15) Indians manager Terry Francona said catcher Yan Gomes is close to returning to the team, but he needs to catch nine innings in a rehab game before being activated, reports the Northeast Ohio Media Group.
"Well, he's closing in on it," manager Terry Francona said to MLB.com. "I think that's stating the obvious, but in fairness to him, we probably need to get him out there nine [innings]. He probably doesn't feel like he needs to, but as bad as we'd like to have him -- and we do -- doing something a day or two early, that would be a bad mistake."
Gomes is on the disabled list with a sprain in his right MCL. He is scheduled to catch seven innings in a rehab game Wednesday.
"I think when you really boil it down, we need to make sure that this kid has every chance to be not just healthy with his knee … you don't want another part of his body breaking down squatting for nine innings," Francona said. "There's some common sense that [trainer] James [Quinlan] used that I wasn't seeing."
|2014 summary: Yan Gomes unexpectedly forced Carlos Santana off the primary catcher's role in 2013, and he did absolutely nothing to make the Indians reverse that decision in 2014. Gomes hit .278 and blasted 21 home runs, while he was fourth among catchers with 61 runs and fifth with 74 RBI. If Gomes displayed a weakness, it's that he walked only 24 times, which sank him to seventh in the Fantasy points rankings for catchers, as compared to fifth in Rotisserie value.|
Playing time status: Regardless of who the backup catcher was, Gomes didn't miss many starts, and only four catchers caught more innings last season. It should be more of the same this season.
2015 outlook: Gomes has hit for power consistently ever since his days in the Florida State League, but his .284 batting average over two season with the Indians has been a pleasant surprise. It might also be unsustainable, unless he can maintain last season's boost to his line drive rate (from 19 to 28 percent). Still, playing time and power should keep Gomes among the top 10 catchers.
