Angels C Chris Iannetta out of lineup on Wednesday vs. Blue Jays

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/20/15) Despite is recent hot hitting, Angels catcher Chris Iannetta finds himself on the bench for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. After getting off to a dreadful start, Iannetta has started to turn things around, as he is currently riding a modest four-game hitting streak. He is 8 for 15 with a home run and five RBI in that four-game span.

Nevertheless, Carlos Perez will draw the start behind the plate, spelling Iannetta.

Angels' Carlos Perez settling in to starting role

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/14/15) Angels catcher Carlos Perez started for the sixth time in an eight-game span on Wednesday and went 1 for 4 at the plate, making him 7 for 22 with one home run and four RBI since joining the major-league roster.

"Any time a player plays well, you're going to earn more playing time," manager Mike Scioscia said before Wednesday's game, per MLB.com. "That's what Carlos has shown."

Chris Iannetta had a batting average below .100 at the time Perez was called up and has hit just .101/.203/.116 in 69 at-bats.

"Chris understands the start he got off to, he understands the need for us to get a little bit of production behind the plate, and he also understands how well Carlos has played when he's been out there," Scioscia said. "Chris has confidence in the way he can play, and hopefully we're going to see some signs of it when he gets his opportunity."

While Scioscia indicated that "we're going to need them both," Perez appears to be settling into a regular role while he continues to produce at the plate.

Carlos Perez in, Chris Iannetta out of Angels lineup Friday

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/8/15) If recent lineups are any indication, the starting job could be slipping away from scuffling Angels catcher Chris Iannetta.

Iannetta has been benched for the third time in four games for the Friday night game against Houston. Carlos Perez is set to start instead.

Iannetta did himself no favors with another hitless performance Thursday. He is 1-for-25 over his last eight games and owns a .091/.197/.106 slash line on the year.

Angels C Chris Iannetta returns to starting lineup Thursday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/7/15) Catcher Chris Iannetta is back in the starting lineup for the Angels on Thursday. Iannetta sat out the last two games while rookie Carlos Perez drew the start. The veteran Iannetta is hitting an ugly .094 on the year, and has gone 0 for 5 lifetime against Astros' starter Collin McHugh.

Angels C Carlos Perez could be earning more playing time

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/7/15) Angels catcher Carlos Perez made such an impression on his ballclub, and the sport, with his walk-off heroics on Tuesday, that there was very little doubt whether or not the rookie would be back in the lineup on Wednesday.

Well, he was. And despite going 0 for 3, questions are starting to arrise in regards to how manager Mike Scioscia will divide the playing time between Perez and incumbent starter Chris Iannetta, according to The Orange County Register.

“We're going to need them both, so whatever it turns out to be, it turns out to be. ... Obviously when a guy plays well, you can earn more playing time,” Scioscia said.

Perez, who is just 24 years of age, was hitting well in Triple-A before his call-up, owning a very impressive .361/.418/.556 batting line in 17 games. Perez also threw out his first baserunner on Wednesday night, after recording seven in Triple-A this year.

Meanwhile, Iannetta has been struggling at the Major League level, hitting just .094 with one extra base hit entering play on Thursday. The Angels will likely give Perez several good looks behind the plate in the coming weeks.
