by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com (5/1/13) The Angels have optioned Nick Maronde to Double-A Arkansas, the club announced Wednesday.

| Angels recall Nick Maronde, option Thomas Field |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (4/23/13) The Angels recalled pitcher Nick Maronde from Double-A Arkansas Tuesday before their game against Texas. The team sent Thomas Field back to Triple-A Salt Lake as the corresponding roster move.
Field appeared in three games for the Angels but did not receive an at-bat. Maronde will pitch out of the bullpen, where he's been used at Double-A. He's 0-1 over six appearances with the Travelers for an ERA of 6.14 with 11 Ks over 7 1/3 innings.

| Angels make series of cuts |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (3/24/13) The Angels made a series of roster moves and cuts Sunday, reports MLB.com. Los Angeles optioned infielder Thomas Field, outfielder Scott Cousins and reliever Nick Maronde to Triple-A Salt Lake. The team also reassigned relievers Chad Cordero and Kevin Johnson and outifelder Matt Young to minor-league camp.
Field hit just .200 this spring during Cactus League play. He could come back up for the Angels as a bench option at some point.
Cousins also hit just .200 this spring to earn his demotion. He should be considered outfield depth at Triple-A.
Maronde, who was able to put up a 2.26 ERA as a starter in 2012 in his first full season, will switch to a relief role at Triple-A. The Angels feel his stuff is better out of the bullpen. He struck out 11 batters this spring over 9 2/3 innings, but also walked seven and gave up 12 earned runs.

| Angels option Nick Maronde, move to bullpen |
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com (3/24/13) The Angels optioned left-handed pitcher Nick Maronde to Triple-A Salt Lake City Sunday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports. The left-hander will be moved to a bullpen role.
Maronde, 23, started 18 games between three levels last season in the Angels system. He recorded an excellent 2.26 ERA and struck out 90 batters against just 19 walks. However, concerns about his pitch mix and delivery have pushed his career onto a bullpen path.
Maronde pitched six innings out of the bullpen for the major-league club in September. He allowed one run on six hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.

| Cubs score four against Nick Maronde in one inning |
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com (3/23/13) Angels pitcher Nick Maronde surrendered four earned runs on four hits and a walk over an inning Saturday against the Cubs. Competing for a spot in the bullpen to begin the year, Maronde has allowed 12 earned runs in 9 2/3 innings for a spring ERA of 11.17. He may soon be on the way to the minors, especially with Garrett Richards pitching well in Saturday's other Angels game.

| Not much was expected of Nick Maronde when the Angels selected him in the third round of the 2011 draft, but he was so successful in his first full year in the majors -- posting a 2.26 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 20 appearances, including 18 starts, between three levels of the minors -- that he got a chance to contribute for the big club last September. Granted, it was as a lefty specialist -- a role that would give him virtually no Fantasy value -- but the Angels still see him as a starter long-term. He'll likely begin 2012 in the minors, where he'll continue to refine his arsenal. If he makes enough progress on that front, he could get a call midseason, particularly if Garrett Richards struggles again as the fifth starter. Maronde isn't exactly an ace in waiting, but he's an intriguing enough prospect to monitor in AL-only leagues. (Updated 1/2/13) |
