Indians prospect Jesus Aguilar showing growth this spring
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(3/22/15) Indians prospect Jesus Aguilar knows he pushed too hard last year, reports MLB.com.
"I just tried to do too much last spring training," Aguilar said. "That's the difference between last year and this year. I'm just trying to make hard contact. I put that in my mind -- just try to do that -- and it's helped me a lot."
Aguilar has made the necessary adjustments this season, posting a .407/.414/.630 slash line. He's hit three doubles and four RBI.
"I think he was pressing," manager Terry Francona said. "Sometimes, you'll see [young] guys like that and they'll just swing crazy. He looked like he was almost trying to shoot the ball to right field, like he was trying to be a No. 2 hitter.
"I just think it was a case of a guy that had really worked hard in Triple-A to build a reputation of being one of the feared hitters, and he came to the Major Leagues and wasn't quite sure where he fit in. That happens a lot."
Aguilar likes the place he's in mentally and thinks he can make the final roster.
"I feel confident and I know everybody here," Aguilar said. "And I know how I've got to play and work. I come here and relax and go to the field and try to do my job. I don't try to put pressure on me now. I let that go and good things happen."
Indians 1B Jesus Aguilar homers, doubles in win over Rockies
|by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com|
|(3/21/15) Indians first baseman Jesus Aguilar homered and doubled in a 10-5 victory over the Rockies. He finsihed the game with three runs driven in.
Aguilar, 24, was hitless last spring with the Indians, but he has been successful at the plate this spring.
"I feel more relaxed, more comfortable this spring," said Aguilar.
The Indians and manager Terry Francona are looking for Aguilar to step up.
"It's so nice to see him have some success here in camp," said Francona. "He's put up big numbers during the season, but he's come to camp and had a really tough time. Now you see the confidence growing.
"He's taking some big swings and rifling the ball the other way and that's good to see."
Last year Aguilar hit 19 homeruns with AAA Columbus.
