| Tyler Austin 'settling in at the plate' |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (4/15/13) Yankees outfield prospect Tyler Austin had a big day for Double-A Trenton Sunday. Austin, who is considered the Yankees' third-best prospect by MLB.com, went 3 for 6 with one double, five RBI and one stolen base.
Austin is batting .256 (11 for 43) with one home run, four doubles and nine RBI in 10 games.
"It felt really good to break out today," Austin said, per MLB.com. "I'm still settling in at the plate, but it's gratifying to see the work pay off."

| Austin not in mix for left field |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (2/25/13) Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters Monday the team is not looking for a long-term solution while Curtis Granderson misses the start of the season due to a fractured forearm. Girardi seemed to be leaning toward non-roster invitees Matt Diaz and Juan Rivera to potentially platoon in left field while Granderson recovers. Girardi added Melky Mesa is the best defensive option to replace Granderson and Zolio Almonte could also figure into the team's plans. Mesa and Almonte are already on the 40-man roster. Girardi made it clear, however, prospects Slade Heathcott and Tyler Austin will not be in the mix.

| Austin emerges from anonymity |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (1/22/13) Yankees outfield prospect Tyler Austin will be in major-league camp this spring. "Very excited about it -- it's something I've dreamed of my entire life," Austin told MLB.com. "Especially to be with the Yankees and get this opportunity and go out and play with those guys -- it's going to be an unbelievable experience that I'll never forget." Austin is not on the Yankees' 40-man roster and is expected to open the season at Double-A Trenton, where he will continue to develop as a prospect. "Every part of my game from defense to base-running to the plate -- I need to improve on every bit of it before I'm ready to go to New York," he said. "Hopefully I work hard each and every day."

| Getting a chance to play a full-season ball for the first time in 2012, Austin has more than lived up to expectations, maintaining a batting average well over .300 during what was nearly a 20-20 campaign. He isn't as hyped as fellow Yankees prospect Mason Williams, presumably because he isn't as "toolsy," but he had better numbers last year and has already gotten a taste of Double-A. Confined to a corner outfield spot, his path to the majors isn't as clear as that of Williams or even Slade Heathcott, another high-upside outfielder in the Yankees system, so one misstep could cause Austin to get lost in the shuffle. But if he continues to hit like he has in his first two minor-league seasons, he could be the first of those three to get the call, potentially even in 2013. Given Brett Gardner's injury history and Ichiro Suzuki's 39 years of age, Austin is a prospect you'll want to have on standby in AL-only leagues. He's not a bad pick for long-term keeper leagues either, even if he's further down the list than some of his fellow Yankees farmhands. (Updated 1/4/13) |
