Nats' Blake Treinen getting on track thanks to better pitch location
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(5/20/15) Nationals reliever Blake Treinen appears to be putting his early season struggles behind him. After opening the season with a 6.00 ERA in his first 11 outings, Treinen has allowed just one run in his last five outings, lowering his ERA to 3.68.
Treinen also has 11 strikeouts in his last 10 innings, including a six-strikeout performance during a four-inning outing May 14 at San Diego.
"It's just being able to put the pitch where I want to, simplifying, not trying to make the best pitch, but make the pitch that's called and just execute location on it," Treinen said, per MASNsports.com. "The last couple of outings for me have been good evidence that it's working."
Nationals RHP gives taxed bullpen a rest on Friday
|by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer|
|(5/15/15) Nationals right-handed reliever Blake Treinen was just what the doctor ordered for manager Matt Williams on Friday. When starter Doug Fister was lifted after pitching just two innings against the Padres, Treinen came on and gave the Nationals threw 57 pitches over four innings, allowing three hits (including a solo home run) and struck out six along the way.
Treinen hadn't pitched in three days, but he was happy just to play his role.
“Every pitcher on the staff would take pride in doing their job and my job [Thursday] was to go out and get as many innings as we could,” he said, per The Washington Post. “Am I glad that we’re a couple arms fresher now? Absolutely. But it still sucks losing.”
The bullpen had been taxed pretty heavily over the last few days, so Trienen's effort allowed Williams to rest his tired arms.
“We still have two lefties that will be fresh [Friday] and all of the right-handers with the exception of Blake so I think we’re okay,” Williams said.

Nationals RHP Blake Treinen adjusting to high-leverage situations
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(4/9/15) Nationals right-hander Blake Treinen was summoned in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game against the Mets, followed by Drew Storen in the ninth to close out a 2-1 victory.
With Tyler Clippard traded to Oakland in the offseason, the Nationals were left without a clear right-handed option as a setup man to start the season. Manager Matt Williams indicated that his plan was to use Treinen coming into the game, per MLB.com. Treinen entered in the eighth and tossed a scoreless frame to help secure the win for Washington.
It was Treinen's 16th career big-league appearance, and he revealed he revealed he'll need to get adjusted to working more high-leverage situations.
"Even last year in the bullpen, I didn't really come in for one-run leads," Treinen said. "So its still new, but I enjoyed it.
"It's something I'll get adjusted to. I don't think it bothers me. I enjoy those moments."
Nationals' Blake Treinen may break camp as a reliever
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(3/6/15) Because the rotation is set with Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, Max Scherzer, Doug Fister and Gio Gonzalez, Nationals manager Matt Williams has not closed the door on the possibility of Blake Treinen making the team as a reliever, according to MLB.com.
Treinen has made eight appearances as a reliever, allowing only two runs in 14 2/3 innings. The right-hander said he's fine with whatever role Williams gives him once they break camp.
"It's always fun to have opportunities to save a game -- coming in big situations. It's spring and everybody is trying to work on stuff. It's still early, but it's still fun of course."
