Cardinals' Greg Garcia hits first career home run on Friday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(6/26/15) In his 19th career big-league game, Cardinals infielder Greg Garcia launched his first Major League home run on Friday night. Garcia's solo shot in the eighth inning tied the game at 2-2, as the Cardinals beat the Cubs 3-2 in 10 innings.

Garcia came on as a pinch-hitter in the eighth and slugged the game-tying long ball off Pedro Strop.

The former seventh-round draft pick just made his season-debut last Friday, but already has five hits in nine at-bats this season.

Cardinals to give 2B Greg Garcia a good look

by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(6/22/15) Second baseman Greg Garcia drew his first start for the Cardinals on Saturday since being called up for Triple-A and manager Mike Matheny wants to see more of the young player in action, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Garcia has three hits in six at-bats this year and so far has shown some nice work with the glove at second.

"We know he's the kind of player who can make an impact around here for us," Matheny said. "He's a versatile player. He's going good right now and I want to see it."

Cardinals promote pair from Memphis and demote two

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/19/15) The Cardinals have shaken up their roster a bit, recalling first baseman Xavier Scruggs and left fielder Greg Garcia from Triple-A Memphis while optioning catcher Ed Easley and pitcher Mitch Harris.

Scruggs owned a six-game hitting streak with the Redbirds before his recall. Garcia has been tearing it up all year to the tune of a .313/.405/.369 slash line with 27 runs and nine stolen bases in 214 at-bats.

Harris is the more significant of the demoted. He pitched in 16 games for St. Louis this season while compiling a 3.63 ERA. Easley batted just twice in his stint with the team.

Cards send Tyler Lyons, Greg Garcia to Triple-A Memphis

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/17/15) The Cardinals announced another round of roster cuts on Saturday. The team optioned left-hander Tyler Lyons and infielder Greg Garcia down to Triple-A Memphis, and reassigned catcher Carson Kelly and infielder Breyvic Valera down to minor-league camp, according to MLB.com.

Cardinals prepping Kozma, Garcia as emergency catchers in spring

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(2/22/15) The Cardinals want to make sure they have all their bases covered this year. That's why infielders Pete Kozma and Greg Garcia are doing drills this spring to serve as emergency catchers if the situation ever presents itself.

"I'll welcome anything," said Kozma, who may also see limited time in the outfield this spring. "I'll expect the unexpected, I guess. Be ready for anything. It doesn't matter where I play. As long as I'm on the field somewhere, I'm OK."

Kozma, who is primarily used as a shortstop, hit .304 with four runs scored in 23 plate appearances in 2014.

"I know how to call a game," Kozma said. "I can see all of Yadi's signs. Whenever he makes a mound visit, I'm right there. ... Getting back there and actually doing it, the ball will be a little different than being at the plate or seeing it. I will be able to see a lot more."
