Pompey, Pillar will compete for starting job in center for Blue Jays
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(11/13/14) With the trade of Anthony Gose, the competition for the starting job in center field this spring for the Blue Jays is between Dalton Pompey and Kevin Pillar. General manager Alex Anthopoulos said Thursday that Pompey has "tremendous upside."
"The ingredients are there. He can be a complete player. He can be an above-average defender in center, but I still think he needs to tighten up some things, and he's been doing that in the Fall League," Anthopoulos said, per Sportsnet.ca. "Continue to get better with his routes, continue to get better with his throwing mechanics and not getting on the side of the ball, getting on top of the ball, because he’s got the arm-strength, and continue to have quality at-bats. That's what we like about his offensive game. He grinds out at-bats, he'll work a walk. It’s a quality at-bat each time."
Dalton Pompey doubles, triples twice in win vs. Orioles

|(9/27/14) Blue Jays outfielder Dalton Pompey had a penchant for extra-base hits Friday, going 3 for 4 with a double and two triples while driving in two runs in his team's 4-2 win over the Orioles.
Pompey opened his night by tripling to right center field to lead off the second inning and scored on a bunt single by the next batter. He then doubled home a run in the third and tripled home another run in the fifth. Pompey's only extra-base hit entering play Friday was a home run Tuesday. He has hit .250/.333/.500 with four RBI and one stolen base in 32 at-bats.
Dalton Pompey slugs first home run Tuesday

|(9/23/14) Blue Jays outfielder Dalton Pompey went 1 for 3 with a walk and a solo home run in his team's 10-2 win over the Mariners Tuesday.
Not only did Pompey hit his first career home run Tuesday, but it came off Mariners ace Felix Hernandez. It was just his fourth hit in 22 at-bats over 12 appearances with the major-league club.
|2014 summary: After doing almost nothing his first three years in the system, Dalton Pompey couldn't be stopped in 2014, beginning the year at high Class A and finishing it in the majors. He hit every step of the way, batting .317 with some extra-base pop and 43 stolen bases in 113 minor-league games. He wasn't quite as good in a September callup, but he finished strong, batting .320 (8 for 25) with four extra-base hits and a steal in his final seven games, all starts.|
Playing time status: With Colby Rasmus out of the picture, Pompey is poised to take over as the Blue Jays' starting center fielder, completing the storybook journey that began last year. Though the Blue Jays may try to work contact-hitting Kevin Pillar into the mix on occasion, Pompey's defense should make him a regular part of the lineup regardless of how well he hits.
2015 outlook: Pompey isn't all speed and defense, though. He's lauded for his athleticism, but he's become quite skilled at the plate, striking out 96 times in 480 at-bats between the majors and minors last year -- an impressive ratio for a toolsy 22-year-old who just ascended three levels in one year. Dexter Fowler seems like a reasonable comparison, though Pompey has less injury risk and certainly more speed, which makes him a sleeper for all formats on Draft Day.
