Astros: Domingo Santana will learn from struggles
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/7/14) Astros rookie outfielder Domingo Santana, sent down after going 0 for 13 with 11 strikeouts, will benefit from his big-league struggles, manager Bo Porter told MLB.com.

"It was good to get him here and experience Major League pitching," Porter said Sunday. "The struggles in which he went through will help him as he moves forward. I talked to him after the game and told him, 'Hitting in the Minor Leagues, as you found out real quickly, it's different there.'

"Pitchers have the ability to throw four pitches in different counts [in the Major Leagues], and that's why it's so important from a mechanical standpoint to be in a good position to hit from your posture and setup. That will help him moving forward."

Astros promote David Martinez, option Domingo Santana
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/6/14) The Astros recalled pitcher David Martinez from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned outfielder Domingo Santana. Martinez was 5-6 with a 4.92 ERA in 75 innings at Oklahoma City.
Domingo Santana among Astros' promotions Tuesday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/1/14) As expected, the Astros promoted outfielder Domingo Santana, infielder Enrique Hernandez and ptcher Kevin Chapman from Triple-A Oklahoma City Tuesday. All three players will be in uniform against the Mariners.
Domingo Santana keeps the parade of outfield prospects marching
by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(7/1/14) Already just since the weekend, the pool of mixed-league relevant outfielders has been enhanced by the arrival of Mookie Betts and the recall of Oscar Taveras. Now it appears that Domingo Santana is going to further enrich the Fantasy outfield corps, as the Astros are on the brink of calling him up for his big league debut.

Santana is certainly not the contact hitter that either Betts or Taveras is, but he has a couple of things going for him that the other two don't. There is little chance that Santana will have to contend with a timeshare in left field, as the Astros' outfield situation is less crowded than that of the Red Sox or Cardinals. Santana also profiles at the best power hitter of the trio, at least for the short term.

His strengths and weaknesses are much like fellow Astro George Springer's. Santana has struck out frequently, but in addition to hitting for power when he does make contact, he also draws walks and has shown some mild stolen base potential. Santana is essentially Springer Lite.

Just shy of his 22nd birthday, Santana certainly has appeal in keeper leagues, but unless he makes an unusally smooth transition to the majors, he probably won't produce enough to merit a spot on your standard mixed league team. In 14-team mixed leagues and deeper, though, Santana is worth adding right now.

Report: Astros to promote prospect Domingo Santana
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/1/14) Astros general manager Jeff Lunhow hinted Sunday a promotion to the majors for outfield prospect Domingo Santana didn't appear imminent. Two days later, it seems he was either bluffing or had a quick change of heart.

Santana, along with infielder Enrique Hernandez and left-handed reliever Kevin Chapman, are expected to be promoted from Triple-A Oklahoma City Tuesday, a baseball source told MLB.com. Santana is considered the Astros' seventh-best prospect by MLB.com.

The 21-year-old outfielder is having a banner year in the minors. He is batting .304 with a .383 on-base percentage, .502 slugging percentage and .885 OPS in 84 games. He has one triple, 13 home runs, 22 doubles, 49 runs, 52 RBI and five stolen bases. Though, Santana continues to post a high strikeout rate, as he's totaled 99 strikeouts this season.
