Padres' Black: Joaquin Benoit to close, happy with options

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/5/15) Padres manager Bud Black said Thursday that while Joaquin Benoit is set to be the team's closer, other relievers could see save chances as well, MLB.com reports.

"You want to get your closer in games because that means you have a lead … and if he's closing games that means you are winning," Black explained. "That means at some point, we have got to put Joaquin down [because], he can't pitch every game. That's what I want."

Black said he has five players available that he's comfortable using in the ninth inning: Benoit, Kevin Quackenbush, Shawn Kelley, Nick Vincent and Dale Thayer.

"Joaquin is projected to be our closer but if he's down then we have a number of options to choose from, guys who have closed major-league games and guys who have been successful at it," Black said. "We have five guys we feel comfortable giving the ball to. That's one of those situations we won't know until we get into the season to see how guys are throwing, how well they're executing their pitches, their confidence, their arms, their stuff … all that stuff adds into the daily decision as to who might close a game if Joaquin is down."

Benoit earned 11 saves in 12 chances with the Padres in 2014, posting a 1.49 ERA and 64:14 K:BB ratio in 54 1/3 innings.

Kevin Quackenbush collects sixth save

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/23/14) Padres closer Kevin Quackenbush converted his sixth save of the season Monday night at home against the Rockies. He struck out one and allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning of work for the save. He needed 19 pitches to close out a 1-0 victory. He has converted 6 of 7 save chances, with a 2.58 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP over 52 1/3 innings of relief.

Joaquin Benoit returns for Padres

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9/22/14) Padres reliever Joaquin Benoit, who had been out since Aug. 26 with shoulder discomfort, returned to the mound Sunday against the Giants, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning of an 8-2 victory.

Benoit was the closer before being sidelined by the injury, and the San Diego Union-Tribune reported earlier in the weekend that the Padres would ease him back into that role. Kevin Quackenbush has closed in his absence.

Kevin Quackenbush picks up his fifth save Saturday

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(9/21/14) Padres closer Kevin Quackenbush saved his fifth game Saturday against the Giants.

Quackenbush entered with a two-run lead, and made things interesting before shutting the door. With two outs, he gave up a run-scoring single to Gregor Blanco. The run was charged to starter Andrew Cashner. Quackenbush managed to pick up a line out to finally close out the game.

Kevin Quackenbush picks up fourth save Tuesday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9/17/14) Padres pitcher Kevin Quackenbush earned his fourth save Tuesday, giving up one earned run on one hit and one walk while striking out one in his team's 5-4 win over the Phillies.

Quackenbush walked a batter with one out, and after the runner took second on catcher's indifference with two outs, a single brought him home to give the reliever his second earned run in his last three appearances. He owns a 2.68 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 53:18 K:BB ratio in 50 1/3 innings.
