Cardinals formulating plan for Randy Choate
by Michael Hurcomb \| CBSSports.com (4/3/13) Veteran reliever Randy Choate made the opening day roster as one of two left-handed pitchers in the Cardinals' bullpen. He didn't make an appearance in either of the team's first two games, but manager Mike Matheny is still trying to formulate a plan on how to use the lefty specialist. "I think we have a different dynamic with Randy," Matheny said Tuesday, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Randy is going to make it a little more challenging to make sure we’re putting guys in the right spots. It’s a whole different thought process and mentality (with him).”

Choate signs with Cardinals

Choate, 37, spent the 2012 season with the Marlins and Dodgers, posting a 3.03 ERA over 38 2/3 innings. The left-handed relief specialist tied for the major league lead in appearances with 80.
